Before I switched to Graphene I ran CalyxOS. It was hacked to pieces and is no where near GrapheneOS or even PostmarketOS I'd say. In fact, I think iOS is probably more secure than CalyxOS!

I've verified that a straight Session apk install on GrapheneOS does not use Google in any way.
The biggest benefit is that Session can run completely independant of platform (Google/Apple) push services and will run completely self-contained. You can set Session to check for messages every X minutes. Of course while the app is open and focused, it's real-time. This removes metadata collection on when/where/how you are messaging.
Session, a fork of Signal, is better because as far as privacy goes as you don't have to download it from a store that violates your privacy. Just go to the offcial site and download the apk.
I was challenged about this subject not too long ago and thought a lot about how do I define adult? In my analysis and perspective, what adult really means in a meaningful applicable way is:

So many great viewpoints here. Crystal for faster and concurrent Ruby. Crystal has a pretty advanced Web Framwork called Lucky not many know about. Haskell so good, but hard to convince people to use it for projects. Haskell also has a very advanced Web Framework called Integrated Haskell Platform. Scala's very impressive feature set. Zig is in such a super position and Julia is capable in so many ways including Fortran integration.
I'm surprised no one has mentioned Chapel or Nim though! My favorite programming speed benchmark is spectral norm and even though Chapel is the fourth fastest language (not benchmark) it's not using the forte of grid parallelism!
Nim is getting to be quite the monster and not beholden to Mega-Corps finance/steering like Python and Go are.

Ah, this post, it was bound to happen. Thing is I know all the internet social rules. I was on a baud modems and Netscape Navigator. I'm an expert at Psychology and many other things.
Let me condense your rules. No judgement, no emotion, no against-the-grain, otherwise I will accumulate anonymous/secret peer pressure ostracizing. Trust me I know, any high schooler will tell you these rules. However, what does that system sound like it will conclude in, a communication expectation of no judgement, no emotion, no singular criticism?
I'm choosing not to play by those rules because they don't improve the human condition which is what I'm after, even if it's only 1 person. Even though you can opt-out of the Telemetry, which can be useful if done correctly, the majority of the most valuable data about your digital life is already collected when you set it up. Opting out only disables further collection.
Mozilla is a significant part of increasing Google's hegemony if you read the article, you have it backwards! The Internet Data search et al. valuation is vastly superior [value] to browser valuation or market share to which Firefox is only something like 7%.
Lastly going with Thunderbird because it's the least bad is a terrible choice to have to make, isn't it? Do I have that wrong? Even if you are on Windows, you can determine to not play the least-bad game of Big-Tech selling the least amount of details about your life and just run your email somewhere else, even in a VM.

I'm seeing many people recommend Thunderbird. Let me enlightnen you.
I personally never trust any software that is not secure and private by default. Mozilla Corp is a for-profit corporation that makes nearly a Billion dollars in cooperation with Google monetizing data about your life. Thunderbird is Mozilla and if you setup with the Wizard, it already got the basics about your email life even if you disable it later.

Conclusion
If email security and privacy means a lot to you, or even computer security and privacy, your best options are to use BSD/UNIX/Void/Alpine and Claws-Mail. That is just the way the cookie crumbles in 2023.

It gets worse. Not having used my Gmail account for years, old phone died, moved to another state with new number there, and I traveled back to Los Angeles in order to log in on the same network, same laptop, correct password, but I put a new HDD in my Macbook Pro which caused Apple to re-ID the OS, and locked out! No way to recover, I try twice a year. Will not even reset to the correct backup email I have! I just get an email saying I tried to login with no actions possible!
Google stole parts of my life from me, the history in those emails, wow!

Let's flip this on it's head for some additional perspective. What if there was a growing subset of computers that preferred not to communicate with their own kind. Does not respond to API requests, etc. but only to human emotional text input?

I know what the counter arguments are all gonna be, I live and breate security. The fact is much of this is outside our inspection. We cannot audit the internal Signal network or it's code. If something comes across as possibly sketchy when deaing with security and privacy, for all intents and purposes it is sketchy and cannot be trusted.
When in doubt, personalize the situation. You have a babysitter. You heard sketchy things and saw some low grade sketchy stuff. What do you do? You boot immediately, right?
