    Not a monopoly though?

    cable companies

Agreed on this one! In theory, there are lots of cable companies.

In practice, you actually only have one cable provider that provides service in your area.

    health care

Also not a monopoly in my area.

Don't get me wrong, I don't mean to defend any of the abusive practices of any of these industries. It's just that they're not monopolies.

  • If cashier isn't a useful job, why are these mega-corporations trying to get me to do it for free?

  • Aldi backs up that tradeoff with commensurately lower prices, though.

"intensive" isn't the right term here, IMO. Pushing me to do the cashier work via self-checkout is more effort than what I do at Aldi. It doesn't need to be "carry this pallet across the Grand Canyon" to be objectionable.

  • It's a 45-minute video. That's a big investment just to engage with a Lemmy post.

  • And since it doesn't think, the results are predictably awful

  • Meanwhile, I've called places to ask to order food only to be told that I have to order online!

While I appreciated being able to order basically everything as takeout during the pandemic, some places took it too far.

  • I used to work in a job where we had a niche ebook reader app in the major app stores. My favorite review that someone left?

    1 star, Worst game ever.

  • Ah, I see what you mean. 7zip's password support looks pretty simple in comparison.

  • more features than 7zip (password, encryption,

    Eh? 7zip supports these.

    profile presets

I have to admit, I'm not familiar with this feature.

  • When the invisible app window happens, you can use the windows key + arrow keys to move the current window around.

Agreed about the mouse thing being infuriating. I match my display resolutions to avoid it.

  • He didn't think he'd get a good deal, but he was blown away!

  • That makes me think of the Klingons from Star Trek "It is only an empty shell; do with it as you will."

  • if you start thinking that killing is humane because “they deserve it”, I will repeat myself, you have a serious problem.

Fair enough. While I don't subscribe to pacifism, I do prefer that self-defense be regarded as an unfortunate necessity. Celebrating violence isn't going to help us.

  • Self-defense is inhumane? Call out the invader first, please, then we can talk about whether the defender is overdoing it.

  • Oh, I understand quite well why it's legal in the US. It's been a topic of some debate my entire life here.

  • Simple: Computers are not doors with locks. Antivirus is not a deadbolt, and IMO it's really misleading to compare them. You're trying to tell people in this thread that you need AV on Linux, against consensus, "because security". I still don't understand why you think it's necessary. What's your threat model? How does AV improve security on your servers in a way that a firewall doesn't?
