You can put Google-free Android forks on your phone or tablet. My phone is LinageOS with minimal Google footprint and my tablet has no gapps at all.

I use Gmail, Tasks, Drive and Calendar for the sake of convenience, since I could self-host all of these.

Look where we are discussing that ex-platform. And that's all that really matters.

There are still speciality communities there not mirrored here, but give it a few more years. My first Lemmy account is now 3+ years old. Let's see where we are in 3 more years.

Shreddit is rate-limiting and takes the GDPR export file as input. It's written in Rust with executable binaries available.

Decline of quality and quantity of traffic in niche subs over several years is very obvious. As to /r/all I never cared about that. Perhaps advertisers and prospective shareholders do.

That is indeed pretty old. At current lifetime cycles a lot of hardware is doomed by obsolescence well before it's ready for the landfill.

There are some vendors like Fairphone and Framework that aim to support longer lived platforms. If it has a removable battery it's a good sign. If it's supported by a community rather than a corporation an even better one. Though with Android you're limited by upstream support, where some Google hardware is more special than other.

Not sure what the other apps are supporting. So web interface might be the only option left in this case.

I run LineageOS sans gapps with F-Droid so use only open source applications. These can be built easily for older systems, assuming you can install F-Droid on your older hardware.

Redditlikes are a lot more than just link aggregators, and the complexity is all server-side. Clients for these are not hard, though good UX is not easy. Which is why I'm currently using the web front end until Jerboa becomes usable or Slide is ported to Lemmy.

Nice to see so many non-technical users. It's good for diversity. HackerNews, Tildes, Hubski and Lobste.rs already cover that sphere pretty well.

But the point that hairtrigger defederation results in fragmentation, up to the point of insularisation remains valid. Islands naturally tend to become obscure.

Give it some time. App support for Lemmy is basically alpha while Lemmy is at beta stage. The good news is that progress has picked up with the latest exit wave.

Your instance might not allow it. E.g. I don't see the option on lemmy.ml but there is one on lemmy.world

You can move to an instance where the operator has a low tolerance for abusive curators.

How is it better? The big issue with IPFS is fast content discovery. How does Locutus do here? Freenet used to be a resouce hog and dog slow.
