I don't really have a problem with it. If you do (and you haven't already heard this tip), try focusing right between their eyes. From their perspective you are making eye contact, and from yours it may be enough to lessen the discomfort.
For me, at least, that feeling is because I just like knowing my software is up to date. Only rarely do I come across an issue that is solved by a newer version, but that's just me I'm sure. I definitely see the appeal to not having to think about your desktop applications individually.

Mine is the best for me because I like it the best. It does what I need with a minimum of configuration or customization. My needs and preferences are probably different from yours though, so Linux Mint Debian Edition with Cinnamon desktop environment might not be the best for you.

This person is desperately trying to convince themself. Once the finance capitalists gain control they will be steering the company. They don't care about long term profits if they can squeeze high short term profits. They don't give a shit about the company, especially in tech. They'll sell off any IP (or keep it for their collection) when it's time for bankruptcy and move on to the next target.
It's because we live in a system with perverse incentives. It's practically designed by psychopaths, for psychopaths. Still, we only get one life, don't spend it going against your better nature.
You don't have to be a genius to learn programming, but it actually isn't for everyone. Some people will never "get it" in any reasonable amount of time studying. Don't ask me how I know!
