  • You know this is a really good analogy, thank you for that perspective.

I guess if it really bothered me, I would just change instance - and I still might, as the association bothers me enough to have mentioned it unprompted.

With that said - the only time someone uses it is when they have nothing else to say, which is a small victory in itself given I doubt I ever say anything that actually justifies the aspersion.

  • Yeah my comment wasn't intended to be critical of the person I was replying to - it was infact highlighting their point.

American cops don't tend to use tasers when the suspect is wielding a knife because it's seen as a lethal weapon, to which they have a lethal response for. Or as another responder replied - the training is the issue, US cops are hardly short of equipment.

  • Honestly this is what infuriates me when 2nd amendment enthusiasts say "UK cops should carry guns" - fuck off mate, we de-escalate and use non-lethal way more effectively than your wanker cops who only have a hammer and everything is a nail.

Give your cops a toolkit instead of just a hammer and you'll see the difference.

  • To some people in some places Facebook is actually necessary in order to have a social life or run a business.

We all know Facebook would die if it charged for access, because it would lose its ubiquity that makes it necessary for some people.

What would actually be good is if instead of charging for privacy, they charged for enhanced features - similar to how discord charges for Nitro (I am not defending discord, just using their payment model as an example)

The problem with that payment model though is then you have to actually develop features people want to pay for. And we all know Facebook is creatively bankrupt.

  • Chill Winston, no need to get so aggressive just because you were wrong about the browser not being a document viewer. Because that's exactly what it is. That's all. No attack on you, your preferences or ideology. Just facts.

I'm clearly not as well versed on the minutia of PDFs as you are, but I am an expert on browsers and their capabilities as a document viewer.

Your preferences are your own, and I am not here to refute them or change your mind. You keep trucking however you like.

  • All in saying is that Firefox is a web browser and not a document viewer

So what do you suppose an HTML document is?

Hint: the clue is in the name.

2nd hint: the first line of any well formed HTML file.

  • They're essential, but they're also numerous. The barrier to entry for a lot of these jobs is "went to school for some time" - which means pretty much everyone is qualified.

    Supply and demand.

Notice how when service staff were allowed back to work, a lot of them didn't, and that drove up zone wages.

And to be clear - I am not advocating for below living wages, nor saying that people doing these jobs are unskilled. You can tell the good from the bad, and I think everyone should be paid at least a living wage.
