  • And skins, tanned, stitched, and treated with resin. Pottery is also an ancient skill.

  • Roquefort-sur-Soulzon would have taken its name from a fortress, too, so that counts.

  • I agree about the latter, he's a centrist Democrat at best, but he's got a lot at stake directly opposing the Trump administration on their latest actions as the US slips into dictatorship, and I'd hardly call that cowardice.

  • Insufficient data!

Was the bench around a corner or jutting out? Was the boy part of a crowd that obscured the bench? Is the bench somehow camouflaged? Is it static and stationary?

Is the boy fully sighted? Is it dark? Did someone distract him? Was he panicked by someone? Could he have deliberately run into it?

  • There's meant to be an internal rhyme there, as in "take one down and pass it around". I suggest "tinker a bit, push a commit".

Also, "programming code"? I'd go with "legacy app" or "code monolith" or something.

And let's also change "92" and "99" to be make the refactor comprehensive.

  • He was 30 minutes' walk from the prison? I guess the net closed very quickly?

  • 1990s experimental ecological project Biosphere 2

I've never read about this! It cost $200 million and was a failure - the soil microbes used much more oxygen than expected and the resulting carbon dioxide reacted with the concrete walls to make calcium carbonate, so neither the human "crew" nor the plants had enough to breathe.

  • That's okay, they have a robot to do maintenance on the robot.

  • Tell the iPhone that the output isn't headphones and it'll stop warning you. Plug it in, then head to Settings -> Sound and Haptics -> Headphone Safety -> USB Audio Accessories.

  • Quick reminder that if we're hearing it from Bannon, there's an agenda being pushed, and it'll be in Trump's best interests. Nice to hear about infighting, though.

  • All well and good in theory, but after bribing a barmaid called "Anon" for a lead, my group have now been directed to talk to a halfling in the corner of the tavern by the name of "Hamas".

  • Unrelated to hoist as in to lift, despite similarities

It's exactly the same word, as I understand it – in this sense, thrown into the air rather than lifted into the air. We've started using the past participle as the present tense, and created "hoisted" to fill the gap, and the violent/uncontrolled sense of the word is now archaic.

  • This is the dumbest comment I've read all day but I've been chuckling about it for a good couple of minutes.

Terminal Server licensing will be bringing them in a tidy amount of money from on-prem enterprises, but it's true that Windows App has a heavy focus on Azure and will definitely be aiming to push people in that direction - it can't even connect to remote Windows PCs.

  • I used to run r/etymology, so digging deeper and being able to wrinkle my nose, furrow my brow, and out-pedantize a pedant is my specialty! And indeed, also learn something in the process.

  • This is true, but as it happens, the general conclusion (per the OED) is that syllabus isn't an authentic Latin word at all, it's a corruption or misreading of Greek sittybos as sillybus (spelling varies). So even though it's modelled after the Latin, it's already plural if the surmise is correct.
