  • Thank you for doing this. I have been watching the user stats, and it's very clear which instances are being targeted.

Defederation should only be considered when there is a potential for serious damage to the community. Given the volume of spambots (there are a few small instances with >10,000 new "users"), defederation is the right solution in these cases. No amount of extra mods can help delete comments from tens of thousands of spambots. If it's a more manageable number of bad actors, then defederation should not be used (looking at you, beehaw).

I don't know if you want to comment publicly, but I remember seeing some discussion with the lemmy devs over implementation of captcha. Was that resolved?

  • In a frantic tone, she declared all of this process to be nonsense (nonsense we had to work with over the last 7 months, so yeah, no shit) and all but ordered me to send her the password manually to her private phone number.

Execs always want security for everyone else except them.

  • I just found out about this and it's very disheartening. I can see trolls being a valid problem but the solution is more mods. What beehaw did is very detrimental to the health of the fediverse, especially in the most crucial month. With two of the largest instances split from each other, it'll be twice as hard to grow a critical mass of content.

I'm blocking all beehaw communities myself. I don't want to contribute to a instance where the admins are selfish.

  • i'm new here but i was on reddit for a long time, and was around during the attempted voat migration.

the main obstacle to a new platform succeeding is that you need a critical mass of content. Of all the people who join, only 10% or so will be actively posting, the rest are just here to consume.

beehaw had a lot of activity, and a few of their subs got to what I consider a critical mass for good discussion. and now they've gone rogue.

I understand the mods had a hard time, but... seriously, this is a huge blow to the fediverse. of all the actions anyone could have done, they've done the most damage to the success of the fediverse, right at a time when growth and activity here is crucial.

I can't help but think the mods could have asked for help moderating. it's a sad sad situation.

i'm personally not going to contribute there anymore, because I want the fediverse as a whole to take off.
