  • Yes, asking these questions is a fantastic thing.

Speaking of questions - I imagine there is a day to use the built in dev tools in the browser to verify that the particular site does this, but I don't know how. Do you happen to know how I might?

I remember signing up for a site a few years ago and they emailed me my confirmation, with my password, in plaintext. I was absolutely shocked

  • "It would be extremely stupid and would inevitably backfire if reddit was responsible. Seriously, if spez has one ounce of foresight he would not be involved."

Well you have convinced me reddit is behind it.

  • It's certainly a great read and is worthwhile, however I fundamentally disagree with the base premise that the goal of a federated system is to be uniformly distributed.

Why should an instance focused on a niche topic have the same representation as a general instance? Why should either have the same representation as one with abhorrent content?

Choosing your instance is effectively a statement that you agree with the mission of the particular instance. The number of low user instances demonstrates that there are a great number of people that share the author's vision of federation.

  • This is definitely the way I'd go about it too, but on the off chance OP tends more towards the crafts side of the spectrum, make it into a fun art project?

If you screw it up you're right back to the beginning, remove, sand, start over.

  • To add context here, it takes your brain somewhere around 100ms to detect and then another 250 to process pain. So 4ms is not only fast, it's absurdly fast.

To get a sense of how fast it is, go ahead and stub your toe, the time it took to feel it is 100 times longer.
