  • some people think that “the customer is always right” isn’t the slogan of a long-dead department store, but rather it’s an actual call the cops law

  • Everyone is talking about defederating preemptively because of XMPP and EEE. But the very fact that we know about EEE means that it's much less likely to succeed.

Zuck is seeing the metaverse crash and burn and he knows he needs to create the next hot new thing before even the boomers left on facebook get bored with it. Twitter crashing and burning is a perfect business opportunity, but he can't just copy Twitter - it has to be "Twitter, but better". So, doing what any exec does, he looks for buzzwords and trends to make his new product more exciting. Hence the fediverse.

From Meta's standpoint, they don't need the Fediverse. Meta operates at a vastly different scale. Mastodon took 7 years to reach ~10M users - Threads did that in a day or two. My guess is that Zuck is riding on the Fediverse buzzword. I'm sure whatever integration he builds in future will be limited.

    TL;DR below:

  • yeah, whoever lobbied for that and got that bill passed was evil.

  • In my city a food truck can’t park within view or 100ft of a restaurant.

Doesn't that mean literally no food trucks along Main Street or wherever all the shops are?

  • Everyone here talking about XMPP and EEE.

  • or use old.reddit.com?

Honestly, i thought I would miss reddit more, but I haven't been back since I moved here and haven't thought about it one bit. I expect I'll still end up on reddit occasionally when I search for something, but I don't see myself ever posting there again.

  • Honestly Reddit doesn't infuriate me anymore. I haven't been on reddit for 2 weeks now and I no longer feel the urge to check that site. I expect I'll still end up there occasionally when I search for stuff, but gone are the days when I spend an hour or two every night on reddit.

  • Adding to that: there is no need to go into detail about the fediverse and how it connects to other instances and mastodon and all that.

For a newcomer, the most important thing is to get their feet wet. Introduce them to ONE instance. kbin.social and lemmy.world are my favorites to introduce to people because it's relatively easy to signup and there is a decent amount of content/activity.

Once they're comfortable poking around, that's when you start talking about instances.

If you start off by telling them to pick an instance, their eyes are going to glaze over. Pick one for them. If they really prefer another instance, great, they can create a new account when they feel strongly enough about it themselves.

  • Thanks! All i can do is try to mention it where I can, and hopefully more people will see this.

  • Do you mind letting us know why? This is something we might change in future, depending on what everyone thinks, so if you have a strong opinion either way we'd love to know.

  • That's very true. For example, a general "anime" community would be better, until it gets hard to keep track of what's on the first page - after which some series could splinter off.

Its hard to get people to agree on this though. And I think the other extreme of not letting people create communities isn't the best either.

  • Dude the submersible's gone, there isn't gonna be another trip down there. Get your $250,000 back and do something meaningful with your life.

  • Number of active users in the last month, along with number of posts and comments, is probably a better metric.

  • What has corruption got to do with Russia invading them?

  • This is the first time I've seen "gimp boy" being used this way.
