No war but the class war

Racing through heavy traffic like an utter sociopath with not only a death wish for myself but also for everybody else on the road.

Which you know, sigh is how people with cool cars tend to drive in real life and I always see them fly by on the highway and am like “Why the hell aren’t you doing this in a video game??”. When you hit a car in a video game at 80mph no one dies, turns out that doing this in real life tends to actually kill people though weirdly.

Just the loudness alone of cool cars all souped up with custom painfully loud exhaust is absolutely insufferable from a noise pollution standpoint. What assholes lol.

I get why people find it fun though….. which is why I have a blast doing it in a video game.

Ok well similarly I don’t care about the supposed promises of longterm openness with Bluesky or how that openness is “locked in” by a bunch of technical details that seem to me there a million ways to undermine at a later date when again, investors come knocking.

Who owns it though? Who are the investors? How are they planning to recoup their investment?

But what is the business model here? Can you honestly tell me with a straight face that you trust them?

After a certain point I don’t care about technical arguments about how the AT protocol is better than AP or how technical aspects of it make it impervious to being controlled, there are always ways. The way we stop it is political, not technical, and just trusting Bluesky will be benevolent towards its federated users indefinitely is not a winning political strategy here in terms of the power dynamics between the ruling class (people like Jack Dorsey) and the rest of us.

Further I bet most of the people involved in Bluesky are really passionate and genuine in their desire, but ultimately their good intentions don’t interface at all with the reality of the structure they are operating in, i.e. an investor backed corporation seeking to profit off of a social network backed by some of the richest most powerful people in the tech world (even if they haven’t directly poured huge amounts of capital into it, they could, the option is there).

You have to ask, why the hell would they be genuinely offering us the future we want for the fediverse? It makes no sense for them too since they simply stand to lose by creating that future for us.

But the resiliency against corporate capture and community ownership, meh I’m not really worried.

You have to explain to me why you think massive tech corporations are going to behave differently here than they always do. Every large tech company behaves like Microsoft after a certain size in terms of values and actions, and they will do their best to mine the valuable aspects of the fediverse out and silo them away in a way that can be monetized.

I consider Flipboard or Mozilla owning instances to be a far different question because these are relatively small corporations, they aren’t Meta, they don’t have more cash on hand than entire countries.

I think the moderation will be an uphill battle for Bluesky.

Moderation is the hard part about social media, who gets to moderate, how moderation is handled between communities and how much human moderation genuinely happens from within the context of communities are all the important questions.

Again, what happens when Bluesky’s investor’s come knocking and want monetization? At that point is the CEO really just going to say “we can’t do that, it would give us more profits but it would be wrong to undercut the openness of Bluesky!”. It is frankly ridiculous to assume this would happen, the same story will play out that always plays out here.

You can either make huge amounts of money off of social media and payback your investors or you can make a healthy community, pick one. Unless you are a massive corporation with a lottttt of investors to please, then there was never really a choice no matter how long your investors let you attempt to fool your customers into thinking so before you hit the gas on cashing in (Reddit).

Seriously I don’t know much about Shenzhen but damn it has to be one of the most unique places on earth in terms of having such a nexus of skilled engineers, technicians and production chains for computer chips.

Yeah it is a tragedy people aren’t paid a living wage :( but if tomorrow Shenzhen just abruptly disappeared from the earth we would be in big trouble as there isn’t really “just somewhere else” where what happens at Shenzhen can happen in terms of the global production of sophisticated electronics.

My basic question is whether the problems that needed solving about Twitter and other corporate social networks really have anything to do with software engineering at the end of the day.

Writing the code is honestly the easiest part in all probability. It is the other parts like community ownership, resiliency against corporate capture and human moderation that takes into consideration complex contexts etc… that are the truly hard parts and Bluesky really says almost nothing (at least worth trusting as more than words) new along those vital metrics (chiefly because it is an investor backed for-profit venture).

Beyond All Reason is a Spring Engine game which is an open source rts engine that has been in development for probably a decade and a half at this point.

It’s pretty common for Xbox controllers to get stick drift especially if they are older. Controllers that use “Hall effect” sensors for the joysticks apparently don’t have this issue but I am not sure there are any affordable ones I can recommend. I am not sure how common it is for Xbox controllers to just have a stick straight up die, that sounds much more unusual and maybe like something that is more prone to happen with a third party controller?

I have never done it but you can replace just the joystick part on the controller and that may be a cheaper route.

Also, if you are playing on a computer, software such as steam will let you define custom dead zones to be just big enough to eliminate stick drift and no bigger which helps a ton.

I have bought multiple Xbox x/s (wtf is wrong with your naming scheme Microsoft seriously) controllers over the years used on eBay at the lower end of the price range ($25ish). I try to find listings that state the controllers have no stick drift. I guess one of the controllers I bought had a bit more stick drift than I wanted but I fiddled with the dead zone (in my case through steam settings) and the problem went away. For precision stuff I use an armor-x pro to give my Xbox controller gyroscope aiming anyways :P

Hopefully nothing can stop the fediverse but I am not convinced a company like Meta can’t embrace, extend and extinguish it.

Absolutely, I honestly find the trope of penetrating into repetitive grey dungeon a really unappealing theme for an entire game but Shattered Pixel Dungeon just has such a tight core gameplay loop I end up enjoying myself.

The really titillating question is what happens when reddit collapses as a trustable source of information and google search is then totally useless.

It turns out social networks aren't great businesses unless you heavily exploit the people maintaining those communities.

We gotta see this as the victory it was.

We made a real impact on a landscape dominated by companies with more cash on hand than entire countries with almost zero budget and the equivalent of maybeeee 100 semi-full time developers, imagine what we can do with more resources and more development time behind the fediverse?

The truth is corporations have zero ability to push social networks into the future where they desperately need to go without violating their basic profit model, everything they are promising right now is either hot air or simply trying to get out in front of regulatory bodies like the EU.

We have no such limitations on our ability to craft the future and thus any speed we grow and innovate at is infinitely faster than Silicon Valley can on a medium term scale.

Hamas physically could not fight a war against Israel given

1. Israel has an incredibly powerful and sophisticated military
2. Israel has the complete military backing of the US which is overwhelmingly powerful
3. Israel controls everything about Gaza including entrance and exit, water, electricity and internet access
4. Hamas has no significant number of anti-air assets, antitank assets or anything required to resist a modern armored ground offensive backed by air superiority

If any one of those four were true, it would be impossible for Hamas to fight a “war”, the fact that all four are true makes it abundantly clear any sense of a “war between two militaries” is a complete warping of reality. Israel does not want to conquer Gaza, it wants erase the human beings living there, this is much scarier than a war. MUCH scarier.

I don’t know what makes my head spin more, the rate at which Israel is slaughtering Palestinians not just with the absolutely mental amount of bombs they are dropping on a tiny area but also with the cutting off of basic necessities and the associated starvation and deaths of despair….. or the fact that US media, Joe Biden and US centrists just don’t seem to have a “too far” for Israel slaughtering Palestinians.

Though I hope Revolt succeeds because Discord has way too big of a monopoly.

I don’t understand why everyone thought moving everything to discord was a good idea that wouldn’t backfire for a million reasons.
