  • You want version 3.2.40.36, which is the last one before the app requirement. It's available on APKMirror and probably elsewhere as well.

  • You can still use the camera as an MTP device via a USB cable without any app. Just not wirelessly; that connection is proprietary (-ish, there are third party apps on some platforms).

  • That was me. FYI, the prior version of the app works without an internet connection. I just tried it and had no problem.

It's only the current version that needs internet and for that only so it can force you to sign in.

You will assuredly want to disable automatic updates on the app, however, to keep it from updating again behind your back. And it's still a buggy piece of shit in either incarnation.

  • Bethesda ought to just let the Doom IP go and give it to someone who actually cares.

I will never give a single red cent to Bethesda ever again and I sure as hell ain't doing it for this. Whatever this is has no business claiming to be a Doom game. They probably would have had slightly better luck if they slapped the veneer of some other IP over it rather than Doom.

  • Penguins without their feathers are still pretty chonk, and decidedly penguin-shaped.

Their feathers (adult feathers, anyhow) are actually rather short but their coverage is extremely dense. The feathers make them waterproof, not insulated. Their thick skin and layer of fat is what makes them coldproof.

  • Yes indeed, I just wrote a rant about this in the Canon community on here.

The two edges of this sword: All of the functionality worked in the previous edition of the app without the "mandatory" account. The upshot of this is, if you grab an APK of the previous (3.2.40.36) version of the app it still works just fine sans account, because the requirement is completely artificial and your camera's hardware has not changed.

That's what I did for now, but given that I only ever used the damn thing as an overwrought remote shutter button when doing macrophotography (you'll never guess the subject), I just bought $6 aftermarket remote release and moved on with life.

For added fun and excitement, if you don't have internet connectivity the app won't work. So, like, if you're out in the wilds on a hike with your camera. Nobody ever does that, right?

All apps are crap. This one is extra crap, now. I've never used it for geotagging and certainly not for transferring images -- not more than once, anyway, because on my phone it takes a solid 15 seconds per image. It would be faster for me to not only take the card out, but crack it open and inspect it with a tunneling electron microscope and type the ones and zeroes into a terminal by hand. I just put the damn card in a reader instead. Always have done.

  • I think most users don’t care about support and will happily run an outdated OS.

This is precisely what happened every time a previous edition of Windows met end of support, with most users only moving to the current version by way of buying a new name-brand PC because their old one either finally broke or, more likely, because it became so loaded down with malware that it was subsequently unusable.

The majority of home users are non-nerds who only barely tolerate their computer at the best of times, click off error messages without reading them, and are quite likely to ignore any pleas from Microsoft to upgrade or buy a new computer as long as the prompts are dismissable and don't go as far as fully locking them out of using their machine.

These users will overwhelmingly have a "go to the store and buy it" mentality; they will not migrate to Linux. Rather, they will march to Best Buy or go to Amazon and buy a new PC with Windows 11 already on it, or maybe a small subset of them will work themselves up to being angry enough to switch to a Mac.

  • Well, there are seven other known sub-planetary bodies (dwarf planets) in the solar system that also have moons: Eris, Haumea, Makemake, Gonggong, Quaoar, Orcus, and Salacia. Eris in particular is larger than Pluto. So then Eris would have to be promoted to being a planet, too. Along with the other six, plus any more we might discover later. At the time of its discovery I don't think anyone had yet observed that Pluto has a moon, and it wasn't discovered until even later that Pluto actually has five moons.

  • I wouldn't put it past an awful lot of people given the stupidity I see on a daily basis.

Pluto is a strange relic that basically got considered a planet only due to the time and method by which it was observed. It was speculated that the perturbations in Neptune's orbit indicated there was another body beyond it which everyone naturally assumed to be a planet. Clyde Tombaugh looked in the location where such an object was believed to be and found Pluto. It was assumed that this was indeed the planet in question.

Pluto was the first thing of its kind that was discovered, but it turns out that there are a lot of things in the solar system that are about the size of Pluto or even larger. And Pluto is too small to be the thing that was actually influencing Neptune's orbit, whatever that may be. We just didn't observe any more of those planetoid bodies until later. But after doing so, that would require us to either declare there are dozens and dozens of planets or, the slightly more sane avenue, come up with a more specific definition of what a planet actually is, which by necessity also excludes Pluto.

All the hype about is basically just down to people refusing to change what they learned in elementary school. But the thing about science is that it changes and is refined over time as we gain understanding of the universe and how things work. This is what makes science science. Anything less is simply dogma.

  • When it's all the same you can ask for it by name.

  • Cripes. Does that mean we're bringing back the "3D Scan Of My Friend's Ass" phenomenon?

  • You get those, too? I guess it's nice to know sometimes that whatever you're doing has pissed off the gibbering hordes of the damned; it means you are annoying the right people.

  • Never mind recent motherboards, I'm still salty about the era of boards from 2004-2010 or so which had USB ports but the BIOS would refuse to accept inputs from them until after POST so you'd have to dredge up a separate PS/2 keyboard and jack it in to be able to configure the damn thing or use the boot menu.

And I had at least one board from that time period which has this same flaw, but with the added layer of joy and excitement that they've removed the PS/2 port block in order to appear "modern." It's still there, of course, but only as a pin header that you need to access from inside the case and plug a breakout board into. If you lose that board the gods themselves couldn't even help you. I used to keep it stuck with painters tape to the inside of the case side panel.

  • Yes, but they can still see your content and comment on it within their own pits/burning lakes/etc., so they spend all day long mocking you and talking about you behind your back where you can't see but you still know they're doing it.

That's part of what makes them hell.
