  • I'm genuinely confused by your question. The same way all technology is being delivered? The bigger research market the cheaper is the product and water treatment is no different.

Our top scientists are not solving water issues because there's no market for it. African people who go 10km one way to the well don't have the funding to fund this and in the grand scale of things this is such a small issue that it gains no attention and it's easier to patch it with temporary solutions and existing inefficient technologies than to invent new stuff.

This is a very well known problem in the charity scene that applies way beyond this water issue and it's not some secret issue that nobody knows about it.

  • tbh I see a philosophical problem of separating markup from programming. Creating object structures be it in Latex or html is essentially the same thing as creating code objects. Most high level programming is more about structures and "placing things around" than people like to admit and that's 90% of all programming today.

  • I think that's the goal! Mosquitos are already being fought this way where genetically modified males are introduced to the environment who are stronger and faster than the locals but their offsprings are sterile. It's a wildly effective strategy!

  • it's this stupid doomerism that thinks that we will run out of drinkable water and start wars.

There's good science that drinkable water is indeed in danger but the doomers ignore the fact that all of this argues about the price of water not the existance of drinkable water. It'll be more expensive, but the market will create new technologies to filter and desalite water so eventually it'll balance out.

In fact, this might be a net good as currently water treatment technology has no investments because water is so plentiful. This means poor regions where water is actually a problem now will get this technology and some balance will be restored to the world.

  • I've been contributing on SO for a decade and comments like this drive me nuts.

It was a free self moderating tool and people couldn't even ask question properly for people to do the work for them for free. The entitlement is astonishing and to have the gal to call SO toxic just shows how undeserving some people are of any assistance.

Yes use the search bar and yes lock the thread if people can't spend 5 minutes to form their question there is no saving of these fools. Period.

In fact my main reason for stopping to contribute was dramatic decrease of question quality not the AI. Just try to follow the new section for a day and tell me it's not a problem, I'll wait.

  • I have an electric standing desk (converts in seconds) and imo it's extremely overrated and doesn't actually do anything.

The science behind this is extremely unconvincing other than "standing is fun sometimes" which is great but you shouldnt force yourself if it doesn't work for you.

What actually works - raise your monitor, lower your keyboard, get a vertical mouse, get a ergonomic keyboard with a track point, get compression socks if you're older and do some yin yoga / stretching. These things actually work. Just listen to your body as you can feel the exact strain and discomfort if you actually pay attention to it.

Also posture is not harmed through idle poses, you don't want to keep your back straight at all times - that's stupid. Main enemy of posture and all muscles is strain and this is fixed by stretching and exercise not standing with a straight back.

  • Yeah it's a safe in my office and I often go back to it for small projects so the stuff mostly works and in good contion just instead of a plastic box its a big ol' iron safe as a lazy precaution and decoration.

One note on safe as a Faraday though is that it has to be a full metal without any rubber seals as any gaps will leak so an old safe is often perfect for this. It also needs to be closed so you want to disable the lock as it's pita to use otherwise and you'll never touch the devices there.

As you pointed out key to sustainable tech is that it has to be used from time to time as if you just put it away in a basement or something it might as well be as good as dead.

  • You're showing your ignorance if you think the whole world has access to fit education. And I say fit because there's a huge difference learning from books made for Americans and AI tailored experiences just for you. The difference is insane and anyone who doesn't understand that should really go out more and I'll leave it at that.

Just the amount of frictionless that AI removes makes learning so much more accessible for huge percentage of population. I'm not even kidding, as an educator, LLM is the best invention since the internet and this will be very apparent in 10 years, you can quote me on this.
