  • hadn't heard of them but they played as an opener to a concert I went to. rather disappointed in the vocals (which consisted mostly of drunk shouting), though the backing band was obviously good. perhaps I'm not punk enough to appreciate it though

  • the problem is that there's people out there who in the analogy don't know how to drive a car, defend it by saying 'I'm just not a car person', and constantly ask to be driven around when a major part of their job is driving a car. somehow when it comes to computers employers tolerate this

  • sure, maybe, but performance doesn't matter for deciding if a language is memory-safe or not. And C++ isn't memory-safe by any commonly used interpretation of that word.

You may of course decide that the downsides of memory-safety aren't worth it for your use-case, that is a separate issue

  • I agree that experienced users can write code that leaks less than in C, leaving aside the bottomless pit of despair that is undefined behaviour. But the the language isn't memory safe, it doesn't even prevent you from returning a reference to a local or helpnwitg iterator invalidation. you don't have to jump through any hoops to enable making that mistake.

  • well, its possible to check if a rust equivalent would be riddled with raw pointers: just check the Servo code base.

personally I think its a good thing to have another browser implementation, regardless of specific choices they make about language or license

  • this right here is the issue, people don't even remember the size smartphone used to be. I've got a phone that's one of the smallest available that still have decent hardware. the screen is still 6.1 inch. your example of a reasonable size is 6.3 inches.

what op and I are actually looking for is something around 5 - 5.3 inches instead, like smartphone used to be. For that size, all that is available today is no-name chinese phones with shit hardware and no support. the big brands are busy selling 6.2 inches as "compact" where it used to be considered phablet size

  • seems like there's an issue with case 3. the person_id and from surveillance_records doesn't match up with the person_id in the hotel_checkins table when joined on hotel-checkin_id

  • haaave you heard about our lord and saviour Typst?

same layout algorithm as LaTeX, but:

    • simpler markup
    • sane, consistent scripting language
    • fast compilation, including incremental updates so you can have a process watching your file and instantly create a new PDF on changes
    • easy collaborative editing through their web app
    • actually understandable error messages
  • To be a positive impact, they just need to be less carbon intensive thans the energy they displace. According to the first results on google, (presumably utility-scale) solar is about 12 times less carbon intensive than natural gas and 20 times compared to coal. So as long as you're replacing base load and not utility solar, balcony solar could be as much as 10 times less efficient and still come out a net positive.

Keep in mind also that these numbers keep improving as solar panel manufacturing becomes more efficient and starts using more green energy itself over the coming decades

  • cage free is better than nothing, but if it were organic it would say so and not just cage free I suspect. I'm not even sure they're free-range, maybe they're just all in a barn with no access to outside fields?

even if they were ecological, to me that seems expensive
