I'm as anti-NAZI as the next guy, but I swear some people have no idea of the nuances of history. I am sure we will start to get a rash of people protesting against Finland soon. We sided with the Soviets because of the convenience of a common enemy, AFTER they had invaded and partitioned and annexed half of Poland right beside the NAZI Germany. The invasion of Poland is what kicked off WWII btw. After the war, the West almost immediately entered into the Cold War with the USSR.

I get it, this is an SS squad, and they contributed to atrocities of NAZI Germany, but I can understand some Ukrainians considering them to be freedom fighters against the Soviets, especially in 2023. It is also a memorial in a church cemetery, and not a statue of Lee in the middle of a town square. A debate is warranted, but I hope some people will learn a little bit more about how history is not black and white with the conversation.

If they could admit true remorse, probably. I'm not Christian though, so that might have something to do with it....

While an interesting map, the US is much more divided by rural vs urban considerations.

As a cis male, I swear that I took a totally different perspective from watching media like Boosom Buddies and Mrs. Doubtfire in my youth. I am sure their perspective is not at all totally reinforced by the propaganda apparatus of the right wing media gaslighing for decades about the "culture war". They already felt alienated because they took the lie that Biden stole the election hook, line, and sinker, despite countless court cases being thrown out and FOX News settling to cough up $800m over their lies. They can't come to reality. Justice is independent of their delusions, and should be a nonfactor if Trump is found guilty in a court of law.

And thank you for accepting criticism on the internet! I think I might really like being on lemmy! I do see where your thinking was there, though.

I agree with the majority of what you are saying, but stating either the USSR or China had a foundation as a republic I would say is a gross mischaracterization, as supreme power within these states were held by the "communist" party, and not the people. Authoritarian regiems may play at calling themselves republics or democracies, but this should never be given credence.

I think authoritarian states typically get mislabeled very easily within modern times, especially by themselves. Some precedent I believe should exist for what I would loosely call "Stalinist" Communism, as that is what has been the most historical application of the term. But the modern Chinese state I believe would make Mao, Lenin, and even Stalin roll around in their graves by being considered Communist, and we should call a spade a spade. China is a fascist country now.

I would argue that China has implemented a one-party fascist system, as the major ideal of communism is the economic side. They have embraced capitalism, be it under the shadow of the authoritarian government, it is capitalism none the less....

From my understanding, this is different then communist states such as Cuba and North Korea, as the large majority of their means of production are still 100% state owned.
