  • iMessage doesn't 'work' unless you're on an Apple device. Then it's just falling back to using SMS, at which point Apple fanboys/girls start bitching because the text bubbles are 'the wrong color' which it's seriously the most ridiculous first-world problem I've ever heard of.

RCS is an attempt to provide similar functionality to EVERYONE without the walled-garden lock-in.

While I'd much rather a fully open (inl source), non-proprietary solution exist, until such time RCS is at least an attempt at a step in the right direction.

Insert meme: You (iMessage user) can't use RCS because Apple won't let you. I (Android User) can't use iMessage because Apple won't let me. We are not the same...

    • Playing/Learning a musical nstrument
    • Reading books
    • Cooking
    • Throw a party for friends or host a board game/poker night
    • Any number of hobbies one could take up (woodworking, coin/stamp collecting, models, knitting/crocheting...)
  • And never, ever, did anyone complain about getting the orientation wrong with DIN connectors.

Hah! Hardly. I have plenty of memories of endlessly rotating mouse and keyboard connectors as I reached behind a computer trying to insert it blindly, and somehow having to try half a dozen times before it finally found just the right orientation.

There's also the issue on the older, large DIN connectors of pins getting bent or broken.

We moved on from those things for darn good reason, and I for one have no interest in going back.

  • This right here. All the UIs these days are so flat! It drives me nuts. I can't tell where the background ends and a button begins. I'm streaming services in my Shield and Roku, I can't tell which movie or episode is actually selected. It's fucking infuriating.

  • I've paid for Relay Pro multiple times over the years, and was happy to do so. And if this subscription had been implemented as just a way to support Relay, I'd have subscribed in a heartbeat, because it's a fantastic app and worth every penny.

But due to all the Reddit API (and other) bullshit behind it, I just can't do it. After many, many years of happy usage, I uninstalled Relay Pro yesterday when I got the update.

As far as I'm concerned, Reddit is now only a "read-only" archive that I'll read if a search returns old information I need, and I'll read just the post/comment I need from an ad-blocking browser then move on elsewhere (ie. lemmy) when I want to participate in conversations.

I know it's highly unlikely, but if dbrady ever releases a Relay for Lemmy app, I'll pay for it.

  • Those nations may have people who are better at hiding their drug use or homosexuality, or more people repressing it, but that's NOT a good thing.

They're are crimes worth being more strict about, and crimes that shouldn't even be crimes.

I'll also note that being more strict about a given crime doesn't necessarily mean just throwing them in a cell and throwing away the key. If the only response you have for someone doing something wrong is punishment, you aren't actually going to make anything better for anyone.

Proper, and actually effective policies to deter most crimes (that are actually worth being crimes ) MUST include supporting education, public health, (both physical and mental), economic strength and balance, as well as supporting and rehabilitating those convicted of crimes, and researching the REAL factors that drive crime whether they be economic, environmental, or otherwise. For example, in the years since we stopped using leaded gas in cars, there has been a significant decrease in certain types of violent crime because we're no longer poisoning our brains with lead. Countries with good sex education and safe, legal abortions also tend to see statistically noticable reductions in crime.

For example, after Portugal decriminalized drug use, side from the obvious reduction in drug related prison population, drug overdose deaths went down, and remain below EU average. And to this day Portugal has one of the lowest rates of drug use in the EU. So what's the point of being'strict' on the crime of drug use???

Money spent fighting the inequalities and injustices that lead to crimes is far more effective than money spent in punishment.

  • UPSes aren't meant to keep things running for long periods of time.

If you're trying to keep things on for hours, you need a generator. Then the UPS just needs to keep things running until the generator comes online.

I suspect it'll be a lot cheaper to get a small generator than it would be to buy enough UPS and batteries to run things for multiple hours.
