  • I think it's clear at this point that the Republican party has been working with Right Wing media and other organizations since the fallout from Watergate. The Federalist Society literally exists to create more conservative judges and hands Republican Presidents lists of their approved judges for federal judge appointments. Fox News, am talk radio like Rush Limbaugh, and now News Max and the Wallstreet Journal became the propaganda arm of the GOP. It will not stop until we reinstitute things like the fairness doctrine in media organizations and stop allowing entertainment channels to call themselves News channels.

  • Cash bonds unfairly affect people with lower incomes. Eliminating cash bonds makes it so people will be released unless they are a risk to the public or are a flight risk from trial. This should reduce the inequality in treatment by the justice system based on income.

  • The latest Supreme Court ruling on whether you had to serve customers whose message you disagreed with even if it is a message related to a protected class, was actually relatively narrow in scope. Unfortunately, the media did a bad job of reporting the actual opinion rather than the multiple procedural problems related to the case that should have stopped it dead in the water.

I do agree with the slippery slope reporting that likely future rulings may actually allow for refusal of service even if the customer is from a protected class unfortunately.

  • To your second point, this is actually a major problem of debates from a psychology stand point. Unless people are willing to change their beliefs, debates actually strengthen their belief in their previously held ideas. It is useless to debate someone that is not willing to change their mind.

  • I am not a doctor but did some neuroscience graduate studies and will try to provide a basic explanation.

The biggest problem with our current understanding of mental illness is we cannot directly connect the cause of mental illnesses to the symptoms like we can in other illnesses of the body. We run into a problem due to the complexity of the brain. For example, Parkinson's disease is generally caused by degradation of the substantia nigra. This causes problems with dopamine signalling leading to paralysis. However, there are psychiatric disorders, for example the catatonic subtype of schizophrenia, which are defined by periods of paralysis that are not affected by the same medications used to treat Parkinson's disease. To use Major Depressive Disorder as an example we have multiple classes of drugs that work on different chemical levels (serotonin and norepinephrine being the most common) and systems in the brain but don't have a one size fits all treatment.

The focus of the DSM is a diagnosis guide that focuses on standardization of symptomology and diagnosis. It has guides on best treatment practices but it is not the primary purpose of the DSM.
