  • It's true in many ways. If I buy McDonald's without the app I pay more for it. If I fill up my gas tank without an app like upside, I pay more for it. There are services that aren't even available to people without modern phones (I refuse to call them smart phones). Maybe we need legislation to ensure all available discounts, services and benefits are available to customers equally regardless of how they engage services.

  • I don't find Lemmy very palatable. I'm still here because I like to hear different perspectives. Lemmy as a whole seems to hate different perspectives, it's like many go out of their way to keep it closer to a hive mind. 80% of the world's people would not fit in here. I don't either, but I don't give a shit.

  • It's true and I love the newcomers. But my NES and N64 were both purchased at release and are still one-owner. And used regularly. I also have a 4070ti but I love those old systems.

  • One of my earliest experiences with the Internet was seeing a picture of a country girl in cowboy boots with a carrot up her ass and an ear of corn stretching her pussy. It was 1991. I also played bridge with people in Asia in the middle of the night.

  • Are you young and have no assets? Because managing risk is an adult thing to do. I used to pirate, but decided the risks outweigh the rewards for me at this time. I might again someday, but not today.

  • The article looked at five years, and even their numbers show most of the job growth going to non-native born citizens. If you look only at 2024, barely any jobs we're created and all of them went to non native born, native citizens actually lost a few jobs last year.

That isn't really a problem on it's own, but it has allowed large corporations to avoid increasing wages, even while everyone is experiencing tough inflation. We need strong living wage legislation and then the foreign born workers will no longer be contributing to wage suppression here.

  • As an anti-aurhoritarian I've been of the opinion that that we've been an authoritarian hell hole for pretty much all of my life. Yes Trump is a fascist but the government is also heavy-handed when Democrats are in power. If you're encouraged that almost half of the votes went to authoritarian Harris, I'd say you shouldn't be. She wasn't a leftist, honestly I think of her as a little bit fascist too, just less ironically puritan.

  • On the contrary, in my experience there are no sidewalks or bicycle lanes or shoulders on the road. So what might be a terrible goal in relatively alternative-transportation-friendly spaces could also be a massive step up for other locations.

  • First amendment protections for speech expressing our grievances against our government are very well established. I think even this Supreme court will agree. We'll see, but this is basic free speech. There are people who are against free speech or waver depending on the kind of speech. I'm all for free speech, even what some would call hate speech. I'm an advocate, and I know the law and precedents. I don't think this has any legs.

  • I'm daily feeding a 15yo boy, two 17yo girls, a 20yo girl, a cat, and my wife and I. I thought my monthly food spending was too high 20 years ago when we were just expecting our first kid, we ate out a little more than we needed to. I'm spending triple that now, almost never eating out, and I make less than I did 20 years ago too. It's completely unsustainable.
