Yeah, it's not the same. That seems just like plain stealing at that point. LJ wouldn't do something like that after spending a decade or more working on sync.
Correction: Sync for iOS was created by the dev's friend.
I have an HP Printer... Actually 2. I didn't want another HP Printer, and I especially did not want another InkJet Printer. Yet we were persuaded into a new printer we've used like 20 times since we bought it.
We don't know if Lemmy is going to last. Why spend time and effort making an app for it to just die. LJ (the dev) needs to eat, and since lemmy isn't popular compared to reddit, jacking up the price seems necessary.
I don't think LJ is being greedy. Again, he needs to eat. It's a niche community, and a niche community will most always be more expensive than other things.
If LJ (the dev) were to make sync open source, I believe the same thing would happen to the developer of Paint.NET. Someone would just steal it and claim it as their own. That's why Paint.NET has been closed source ever since. I understand your reasoning, but the positives outweigh the negatives for me.
Mans gotta eat. Sent from Sync for Lemmy.
