Despite everything, Márquez Duany doesn’t blame Trump. “There are probably too many people here,” he says. “I understand trying to get rid of those who shouldn’t be here. But Trump should look at each individual case.
Not only that, but politicians are very concerned about their legacies, how they will be remembered. And politicians who hold on until the end do not get to manage an important part of their legacies: how they are replaced.
RBG is the prime example of this. If she had retired while Obama could have appointed her successor, she could have seen someone sane carry her seat forward in her last years. Instead, she died knowing that her replacement would probably seek to undo much of what she did.
If this congressman had not run again in 2024, he could have directly endorsed his successor and made sure his constituents were adequately represented throughout. Now Democrats are down a seat until the election to replace him, and his constituents will have to go through someone else if they need help out of Congress.
If we do end up in a fascist hellhole here, a lot of the blame will go to both Biden and RBG. If they both yielded to younger leaders at the proper time, we would not be quite so fucked over now.
But Legal is how the courts work, and at least right now the courts are the only institution that are putting a check on Trump (sometimes). Congress should be the ones making sure the Presidency is serving the needs of Justice, but that's not going to happen anytime soon
These two are not being imprisoned (yet), they were never even accused of any crime other than not having authorization to be here (which is not always a crime in the first place), and they were originally from El Salvador.
So as shitty as the situation is, it is likely totally legal, and is a lot different than being deported and imprisoned on made up charges that you couldn't defend.
