  • Honest to goodness, it was freaking good. I'm sure the Europeans would absolutely die if they tried it, they'd be so offended we call it cheese, but it was good .

  • Oh Lord, ask someone smarter than me! Lol. I was clarifying terms more than anything else. Communism is an end stage, an eventual goal. That's the big sticking point between anarchists (hi!) and communists. Communists believe in capturing the state so that it can be transformed and eventually wither away to become a communist society, anarchists believe in dismantling the state and creating communism directly. There are other differences, including how we define terms such "the state," but that's the jist.

I guess firstly, I should probably out myself that I'm not a Marxist leninists, but more along the lines of a syndicalist or platformist. Council communist is a semi appropriate term. I also don't believe the same system that would work in rural Tennessee would be viable for urban New York. I believe in democratic, worker control. Consensus democracy and direct democratic control. The trouble is, I, and many others, don't believe that communism is possible in just a single area. It would be subsumed, attacked, overthrown. It, by necessity, must be either a world wide movement to achieve True Communism™, or it would need to be isolated, insular, and completely or near completely self sufficient. The latter option is, frankly, kind of shit, and in my opinion, when combined with more authoritarian means and the "capture the state" side of things, leads to dictators and shitty conditions.

  • What? I had no idea! I manually migrated my subscriptions over when I switched!

It was hard for me, so I vote everyone must manually do it, for character building or some such bullshit.

  • We had government cheese in the late 90s and early 00s. Honestly, it was good. I don't know wtf the difference between gubment cheese and American cheese was, but it was so much better than regular American cheese.

  • I don't think money makes a society inherently capitalist, money predates capitalism by a loooong time, but I agree that if it has money it isn't communist. It can be on its way to communist, a transitonary state, and depending on your definition it can be socialist, but communist is explicitly a moneyless, classless, stateless society. So, yeah, if it's got it money, it's not communist, but saying it's capitalist is to create a false dichotomy of there only being fully realized communism or capitalism, with nothing outside of or in-between the two.

Eta: replied to the wrong person in the thread. Whoops. Meant to reply to the original commenter on this thread.

  • The last one there is my basic philosophy for real life. Magic is real, we just understand it really, really well

  • I always mention whenever I see libro.fm brought up: if you don't have a local store you want to support for whatever reasons, Firestorm in Asheville, North Carolina is a fantastic refuge for the local queer community, it's a worker cooperative, and they're struggling to survive. Please consider them if there isn't another local place in your own community. With the big book stores and then Amazon, a lot of communities don't have a physical local shop anymore, so if someone has a plug for their local, I think it's worth making on these kinds of threads.

  • I just leave mine on top 6 hours, and it's been plenty for my use, but if scaled can show me smaller communities where I might find new stuff, I'll definitely try that!

  • Please, please tell me this is an actual shitty movie and not just an AI poster or some shit?

  • So, how does one get this particular sticker for their vehicle? Asking for a friend.

  • Excuse me, this is Me Erasure. I am beautiful in my own way, tyvm. It's not my fault I had a weird evening in which a genie wish went wrong, and John Cleese loved me carnally.

  • Can you explain to me, an Idiot™, what that would mean for me in practice if I switched? Would I be able to use the play store? What about my bank's app, or something that uses location, like Grindr?

  • When I was 18, I lived in an apartment building like 1/4 from the sand in Virginia Beach. They had restrictions on their restrictions so they could restrict you while you were restricted. It was insane.

My neighbor directly above us had the sweetest pit bull mix in the world named Lola. He used to call her his showgirl, she was amazing.

He got away with it by showing them papers, that he 100% forged, saying she was a pure blooded Staffing Nannyshire terrier. He was so fucking pleased with himself, and I do not blame him. In case anyone isn't aware, Staffordshire terriers are a related breed to pit bulls (and pit bull is more of an umbrella term for several breeds), and pittys were called nanny dogs back in the day. He just threw some related words together and claimed her breed was originally bred as show dogs, and weren't closely related to pit bulls. And the apartment bought it hook line and sinker.

  • Does Lemmy have a Pareidolia community?

  • Thing is, I only had a minor sore throat for like 24 hours, with a couple white spots, and honestly, I just thought the sore throat was from some, uh, recreational activity the night before. But I felt just awful and flinchy* for several days, then I got these red bumps all over my back and shoulders, and then almost died.

*I get flinchy when I have a fever or get sick. Something touches me and it's like my body jumps or flinches and I don't understand it at all. It's happened my whole life, but about 6 months after the scarlet fever I got mono, and got super flinchy as well, and now that's just a thing that happens to me now, where my body involuntarily flinches whenever anything touches it. It's not all the time, but it'll do it for several days with no reason, and then not again for months. Doc doesn't know why, but guesses it's because the mono virus sticks around in you forever, and it's just an after effect. Says hopefully it'll go away eventually, but it's been like 5 years, and every so often (coincidentally happening the last couple days) I just suddenly become a scared Chihuahua or some shit

  • TIL why my mom always checked my throats for spots whenever we mentioned any kind of not feeling well. First thing she did. I always assumed it was just a strep thing, but she grew up in a time when measles was still an active threat. I just remember white spots in the throat being the biggest thing. No white spots, go to bed. White spots, go to doctor.

Fun fact: I ignored that advice in my late twenties and ended up with scarlet fever. Like a fucking Victorian child. Didn't even know scarlet fever was still a thing.

  • Don't worry, after we invade and occupy purchase Greenland Red, White, And Blueland, I'm sure we'll "purchase" Iceland, too. Then we can all go live there...

  • Shut up, my paper isn't due until Sunday, and I needed make this pillow cases today!

  • I'm never sure if asking about someone's medical status is impolite or not, so I'll just say I genuinely hope you're well now, and fuck cancer.

And I've been told similar. My doctor always thinks I'm on the verge of passing out. I'm not. I'm just over here silently reciting the Lord's prayer, or "om Mani padme hum" or whatever I think might distract my brain haha. I never give em a fight, but my brain has to be elsewhere
