  • LineageOS has needed exactly zero tinkering from me on the last three phones I've had.

I hear this all the time from people: "I used to root/flash and it was a hassle so I stopped." And yet they still talk about it as if they're doing it now.

What you remember is not how it currently is. Graphene and Lineage are stable ROMs. It's not this nightmare people keep claiming it is

  • Isn't Google Messages tied to an account?

Couldn't they just block the accounts that are spamming?

Why the hell does this have to be about the phone's "integrity"?

It's genuinely disgusting how Google talks about unlocked bootloaders and rooting. They talk about it like Apple talks about side loading apps: some offensive, gross aberration of their beautiful ecosystem, when what they're talking about is their own customers using their own device how they like.

  • No one should have to.

It's ridiculous how far we've allowed this vendor lock in shit to get. Apple and Google should both be hit over the head repeatedly until they open the messaging up.

SMS had many issues but the ease with which one person could reach another was a genuine benefit for communication. And we've let these companies take us away from that. It's absolute bullshit.

  • Seriously, I'm getting tired of hearing people throw around words like dated and modern to describe what are just a different styles of app UI.

There's nothing wrong with how it looks now. As long as the new look doesn't hide actual features and options while wasting screen space, I'll be fine with it, but there was nothing wrong with how it is now.

  • No one is saying you should have to. Any site that forces you to download an app on mobile is shitty.

They're saying there should be an option for devs and users that want to use it. Web apps shouldn't be the only way of reaching the smartphone audiences if you don't want to go through the Apple App Store.

higher complexity, devs have a bit more freedom I guess

    That isn't a minor thing.

  • What difference does it make to you if other iPhone users are given the option? You don't have to use anything but the App store, just like how you don't have to use anything but the Play Store on Android if you don't want to.

  • Eh, they're good in that way, but there's trade-offs too. Not every app needs to be always online, but web apps do.

It's also nice to be able to control what version of an app I'm using. I've got a couple apps that won't be updated any time soon because the new version changed or broke something, removed a function, or had a terrible redesign, etc.

  • Right, but they've changed the default from one that's been around for about 15 years and for which there are numerous open source alternatives to a new one.

The open source fonts will catch up eventually but really all this is about is them refreshing their proprietary shit for 365, and making it cloud based to boot.

  • Oh you mean all of those people on the back bench that Biden beat once already?

The people that, unlike Biden, have never beaten Trump in an election?

The people who aren't the incumbent president when history shows a very clear pattern of voters choosing to re-elect incumbents?

  • Problem is, even when we get over this shit and hire the "creatives" back, they won't be getting the same wages.

And a lot of the money that could go to the artists is going to go to these silicone valley pricks, too. Never think for a second the people making AI like this don't appreciate what they're doing. This shit is custom built to steal the livelihood from artists and put it directly into their own pockets.

  • Don't underestimate the power of user experience shaping.

The front page is how most interact with the site, and helped it grow. The front page algorithm is bastardized to hell and back now, and unless you're on old.reddit, you cant sort by Hot by default.

Reddit is strangling itself to death with how fiercely it's trying to corral users in various directions. Every HeGetsUs post they force users to look at shoves good content one rank down.

This has an effect on the site overall.
