  • Of course the Wagner group is involved with the coup. At this point they're like a comical gaggle of supervillains.

  • What are your thoughts on the Ooni?

  • “Just Google it, I'm on my phone right now"

    [twitches]

  • Yeah, as a result I just see matrix + Tulir's bridges as a system that I've deployed just for me.

I get all my chat networks in one place, and others get to see me online on their networks of choice. Not perfect, but not the worst.

And it's leagues ahead of Trillian and the rest of those older solutions.

  • It's not that simple. Games are bigger and more complex than ever, and studios/publishers/VCs are pushing devs to release earlier and earlier.

As long as the majority of players see it as acceptable (which, sadly, is true), developers will utilize whatever they can to deliver on time.

Note: Even though I'm making points to the contrary, know that I'm on your side. I dislike FSR and DLSS. (at least in any profile beneath Balanced)

  • They just made a post yesterday promising performance patches, but I think it's important to understand the issues I mentioned won't be fixed.

Frame drops and stuttering? Sure, they can fix that.

Designing your rendering system and performance targets around the use of DLSS/FSR? That won't change. Blame the PS5 and new Xbox for that. A lot of AAA games are going to be like that for a while.

  • The game isn't as bad as, say, Jedi: Survivor, but the overall performance isn't great.

It's designed to be run with up scaling on, which is a shame.

    Either way, amazing game.

  • Looking at what's inside, it looks like a diaper changing station? The image is of a baby with a diaper?

But, yeah, if it's unclear then it's definitely not great.

  • What's so bad about it?

  • While I prefer Lemmy more, I'm enjoying my time there.

Can you cite any examples of weird behavior centered around its admin? I don't read Tildes enough to have noticed it, I guess.

  • Gross, you have a point.

My Librem phone finally arrived (to a friend in the US), I guess I'm going to have to try using it the next time I'm there.

  • Yes, this is very correct.

As a person who's been using said bridges as his primary form of contact for years, it's very difficult to tell people: "Hey, I'm not actually reachable on Whatsapp/Signal/Telegram, please just call me instead".

As a result, I have a backup "net phone" in one of my cupboards with each of those apps installed. If I'm dealing with a particularly stubborn person I have to use it as a fall back.

So, while I love these bridges, your comment is completely valid and anyone thinking of using them should be aware of that.

TLDR, my Matrix chats are filled with:

    Person A (WA): Incoming call

Me: I don't have whatsapp, needs to be a normal call :(

Person A (WA): Ok. Calling in five minutes.

  • Been using their bridges for over 2 years, super happy that I no longer need WhatsApp installed on my phone.

If you're like me and live in a country where a shitty chat application is required to be able to function in society, software like this is a breath of fresh air. The bridges are also super stable and incredibly well written.

Note: to be clear, I don't use beeper itself, but use their open source bridges (what beeper is using internally) on my own self hosted Matrix server.

  • Google's product lead on the system, Micah Berman, insisted it had worked. "We are confident that this system fired and sent alerts," he told the BBC. However, the company did not provide evidence that these alerts were widely received.

Personally I don't think they have any responsibility to build such a system, or even have it function properly. By "weird flex" I was specifically referring to the "We are confident that this system fired and sent alerts" line.

Obviously my view is anecdotal (especially the whole "No one got any sort of alert" part of my original comment), so take what I say with a grain of salt!

  • Google is not taking any blame. Google prepared an optional Earthquake alert system, it did not work, and they're claiming it did.

No one asked for such a system in the first place from them, and while it's nice they'd go about doing something like that in Earthquake prone parts of the world, if it doesn't work they probably shouldn't get up and start declaring "No no, it totally did work, dunno what those survivors are on about."

Is this something Google regularly does? Release alerts about earthquakes? Is it specific to Turkey or global?

From the article (which you should read, it's quite short):

Google's Android Earthquake Alert System was announced in Turkey in June 2021. The system is operational in dozens of countries around the world. The company describes the ability to send quake alerts as a "core" part of its Android service.

  • I live in Turkey and know numerous folks who were in the quake, or had family members in the quake. No one got any sort of alert.

    Weird flex, Google.

Edit: To make things clear, I'm not implying that Google had any responsibility to anyone as far as Earthquake reporting is concerned; I simply find it odd they would insist that "no no no the system totally worked' when it clearly didn't. A lot of people died, maybe don't use this specific incident to make your point?

  • Don't forget the metaverse!

  • In my early 30s - spent my 20s saving, only went on holidays twice in the past 10 years (and one of those times was a trip to Japan - ironic), and am considered a high earner in my field.

...the idea of buying a nice house that I enjoy, in an area that isn't depressing, is so far off it's almost a joke.

Kids? The very idea seems laughable to me.
