In an interview with NPR, Russell Moore, who is editor-in-chief of Christianity Today, said that he hears from pastors who tell him about congregants who take umbrage at Jesus telling his followers to turn the other cheek. Moore said that someone invariably comes up to the pastor afterwards and says, “Where did you get those liberal talking points?”
“And what was alarming to me is that in most of these scenarios, when the pastor would say, ‘I’m literally quoting Jesus Christ,’ the response would not be, ‘I apologize,'” Moore recounted. “The response would be, ‘Yes, but that doesn’t work anymore. That’s weak.'” For him, that shows that Christianity is in a state of crisis.
Literally from the article. Not sure how much closer to the horse's mouth you need it to be. I'm in a pretty conservative area and this also rings true to sentiments I've heard from supposed Christians.
I work for a plant that prints local papers. They are an invaluable source of local news, and you are correct, the internet is slowly killing them. It's a real loss for civic engagement. People really need to pay attention to what's happening locally. National stories are sexier, but we actually have much more control over what happens in our own neighborhoods and towns.
Please tell me you aren't getting your news from Disney. But seriously, a halfway decent local paper is probably more worth your attention than the latest attention grabbing headline at the NYT. Good choice.
I think most people here are under the impression that I'm defending Trump or something. I'm not, and I personally think he should be in jail. What I'm saying is, given the political circumstances, there's going to need to be something directly from him for this to really matter. Prosecutors and judges are being extremely careful to not look biased. But I hope my scepticism is proven wrong. I'm really still in the "I'll believe Trump gets convicted when I see it happen" camp. This all still feels like a show to me. Again, I believe he deserves to be in jail, but I don't think he ever will be. My personal theory is that all these trials are just an attempt to distract him and eat up valuable time and money that he needs to be able to campaign. He ain't getting convicted though, unfortunately. We all know we have a two-tiered justice system in the US. Any average person would be in a dungeon already for what Trump has done.
From what I could see with the latest TikTok dust-up here in the US, the first thing lawmakers tried to use the situation for was to reduce online privacy.
Well the plot twist is, they were generally exceptionally smart at what they needed to know to survive. It's easy to forget how difficult life was for average people up until fairly recently. Like less than a century ago. Education and literacy really weren't a priority.
One of my favorite theories, by no means provable, is that since the left side of the brain controls the right side of the body and also language (both of those are true actually), it's literally disparaging the side of the body it doesn't control and praising the side it does, which is why so often "left" develops negative connotations and "right" positive ones.
I have no idea what that is, and I'm very thankful for it.
