  • I'm happy people are sharing stuff to Lemmy, it's been a little quiet.

I definitely value the Forbes article over the MSN but we might not be talking about it if we hadn't seen this post. let's not be too critical when people are participating positively.

  • wow could you be any more up your own ass. I mean I use both but I don't think I'm Jesus for knowing what systemd is.

  • I think it was the most honest portrayal of mental illness in a show I've ever seen. not judgy about shit either and didn't make it the only defining feature of a character. the writing was excellent.

  • I think it's just a Hollywood cliche with enough truth it plays out in the real world here and there. a lot of the show was a commentary on LA culture and how it'll swallow people.

there are a lot of parallels here but I'm sure it's a coincidence, but it shows how right the series got it.

that show really hit me. I feel really bad for Matthew Perry, I didn't know anything about his struggles until now and it's really sad. the world really eats some people alive.

  • great episode. I honestly think of it often.

  • back in the 90s I was in a very famous teeeeveeeee showww

  • but the E literally stands for emulator

    (I'm kidding)

  • Panik

    Jump
  • I actually really like this. 17 is three less than 20, 20x3 is 60, 3x3 is 9, 51 is 60-9. It just feels nice how it all fits together.

  • that's literally the whole point of this?

the point of this is a new youtube is unlikely to take off because people can't start using it without missing all their regular content.

this means you can keep all your regular content and add new sources, with the same creators, which means they can start to move to new platforms and take their followers. that's how we'll replace youtube.

  • I see you've never experienced a drought

  • it's so good, wish I'd found it sooner

  • I'm now using ungoogled chrome, Firefox and cromite on my phone. it's working pretty well

  • I did that once when I moved from one DB IDE to another and didn't realise the new one only ran the highlighted part of the query.

there were thousands of medical students going through a long process to find placements with doctors and we had a database and custom state machine to move them through the stages of application and approval.

a bug meant a student had been moved to the wrong state. so I used a snippet of SQL to reset that one student, and as a nervous habit highlighted parts of the query as I reread them to be sure it was correct.

then hit run with the first half highlighted, without the where clause, so everyone in the entire database got moved to the wrong fucking state.

we had 24 hourly backups but I did it late in the evening, and because it was a couple of days before the hard deadline for the students to get their placements done hundreds of students had been updating information that day.

I spent until 4am the next day working out ways to imply what state everyone was in by which other fields had been updated to what, and incidentally found the original bug in the process 😒

anyway, I hope you feel better soon buddy. it sucks but it happens, and not just to you. good luck.

  • I'm not blaming the people at the rave but the policy of Israel.

Hamas is a terrorist organisation and awful, but they wouldn't have the numbers or the motivation without Israel's actions.

They're both bad, what just happened is unforgivable, but we can't just start turning a blind eye to Israel - they aren't the good guys. They're talking about cutting off water supply for millions of people in a desert as retaliation. That's really scary escalation.

  • you'd forget to pop

  • When I was about 15 I woke up at about 4am, super distressed, and I knew someone had died. I didn't want to go look so I just hoped it wasn't my mother or father, shamefully I thought it would be better if it was a grandparent. There was a lot of going over possibilities and mental bargaining.

Eventually I calmed down and realised it was irrational and finally got back to sleep, the following day I found out it was a close friend of my mother's. She'd killed herself. I don't understand what happened, I don't really believe in the supernatural but it was very strange.

  • Youtube lets you monetize videos - I'd assume you can make more (and earn a living) more easily there than via an alternative. I agree they should be looking at alternatives but until they can earn a living there I doubt much will change.
