  • Basically: Musk bribed trump a cool 250 mil, to go in and personally destroy all the regulatory agencies that would regulate his companies. His task now done, he goes back to ranting on Twitter.

  • Hey thanks for doing this! Impressive that you can support 10 paid staff. As someone also doing FOSS development in Europe, it's inspiring that you managed to achieve this so I'm hoping you could share some light. How do you have so many people donating? Do you have dedicated outreach people or just people donate on their own. My own FOSS projects typically just get enough donations to cover their hosting costs and not much else.

Did you start as a big team, or just kinda grew from one person's projects starting 20 years ago?

Any tips and strategies to other FOSS devs in Europe would be greatly appreciated.

  • So, you send a PM via your own server, so it's how your server refers to the remote user. So your own server's ID of that user matters, not the remote server's ID.

  • use get_user to get the user json, then PM using the id key of that

  • You can send messages to anyone with pythorhead, you just do it via your own lemmy server and need to provide the full username address

  • The cynical view of America’s educational system—that it is merely a means by which privileged co-eds can make the right connections, build “social capital,” and get laid—is obviously on full display here.

Cynical? I call that realistic. That's what privileged co-eds have been using it for the past 100 years.

  • I'm not following SO practices, but I it will come for it as well. It's inevitable. Those who paid billions for it will require a ROI

  • I don't think it's anywhere near that bad to be honest.

  • and not using anything that identifies the universe.

Well, to be fair, it does have stormtroopers and they do say "may the force be with you" to each other.

  • Can you give an example of this enshittification for profit?

    reddit.com

  • Yes, it's what I was referring to in the second part.

  • "Free to use" on a VC-backed service just means you're the product. I am accusing them of the same thing I'm accusing each VC-backed service: That they exploit our efforts to cash out and then sell the service for someone who will enshittify it for profit.

Also, what do you mean "easily downloadable"? Can anyone download the entire corpus of SO in a way that they could set up their own SO with the same content to bootstrap them?

  • The need for the service that SO provided won't go away. Eventually people will migrate to new places to discuss. LLM creators will either constantly scrape those as well, forcing them to implement more and more countermeasures and GenAI-poison, or the services themselves will enshittify and sell our content (i.e. the commons) to LLM-creators.

  • Making the account on a very old device (which has never logged into Reddit before)

Did you continue using your account only on that device? If so, did you continue using reddit logged-out on your main device at the same time?

  • Never again will I help provide content to a VC-backed service just so that they can rugpull us and cash-out.

  • If one is dedicated enough, they can set something up for their comms or instance. But ye, there's less incentive to farm karma for bots, but there's still a need to be able to figure out a "reputation" for a user if the spam problem becomes too big.
