  • Claiming to be mad, anyway. I think they’re trying to wash themselves and their party of it by pinning everything on Biden, which is easy to do now that their party is out of power and Biden is politically sunset.

  • I never thought about the word, and I was a little skeptical of Wiktionary’s etymology.

    umpteen

From ump (“colloquial name for the dash "—" in Morse code”) +‎ -teen.

    ump

    Clipping of umpire

    umpire

From a Middle English rebracketing of a noumpere as an oumpere, from Old French nonper (“odd number, not even (as a tie-breaking arbitrator)”), from non (“not”) + per (“equal”), from Latin par (“equal”). Doublet of nonpareil.

But etymonline has basically the same answer. The idea that it came directly from military slang regarding Morse code makes it more believable. Plus I’ve heard umpty used before as an arbitrarily large number, specifically as umpty odd [something].

    umpteen

indefinite number, "many, a lot of," by 1907, popularized in World War I army slang, from umpty + -teen.

    umpty

1905, "of an indefinite number," usually a large one, military slang; earlier it was Morse code slang for a dash; the form influenced by association with numerals such as twenty, thirty.

  • I guess he went down the Trotskyism to neoconservatism pipeline.

The Curious Case of the Late David Horowitz

Soon he was renouncing even his dead parents’ memberships in the Communist Party when they were raising him in Queens. He began a hard turn toward the right. His denunciations of his former comrades devolved into a bitter resentment, and his scorched-earth tactics remained rooted in a Trotskyite Manichaeism that continued to mark his worldview.

He found rich backers to fund his fulminations. He excoriated America’s colleges and elite universities as Trojan Horses harboring diehard Marxist professors who, in his view, had bent the pedagogy to the inculcation of ideological biases in their young charges. He mentored Stephen Miller, now Trump’s Gauleiter of immigration. In many respects, Steve Bannon could be said to be Horowitz’s Frankenstein.

  • I used to ride. People who say that know it’s just a bullshit excuse to be a dick. Just roll your eyes and/or flip them the bird. Actually, most of them get off on you flipping them the bird, because they’re dicks 🤷

  • Neat! I’ve only ever seen commercial-grade ones like that.

  • Profiting from let’s you and him fight is a classic, and was factored in to the US’ grand chessboard strategy against Russia.

Speaking of salami slicing: every accusation is a confession. https://euromaidanpress.com/2024/06/06/the-wests-fear-of-escalation-is-russias-greatest-weapon/

However, such overt and assertive threats to the West on core issues like NATO’s existence are unlikely to yield any tangible results for Russia. Therefore, to manage escalation while achieving geopolitical goals, Russia employs what experts term “Salami slicing tactics” — tactics involving incremental, limited actions to expand influence while mitigating the risk of escalation.

  • Sure, edge cases like that do happen at the US military-spook-industrial complex level, but I think the chances of my idea for a consumer product getting stolen that way are vanishingly small. Conversely, I’ll definitely never ship a product if I give in overly to paranoia.
