  • Yeah, there's probably a bunch of those. I know a few countries claim "t-pop".

  • Most windows in X are actually two windows: one inset inside the other. That's how you get a border & title bar. Does that account for the error you're seeing?

  • Well, ACTUALLY, they're only being elitist about the kernel, and they're gatekeeping about userspace programs, SO...

  • Snowden's document dump proved that was not the case. He showed the techniques the NSA used to hack Cisco's, and it involved intercepting the physical machines being shipped. They did NOT have back doors in the machines as Cisco shipped them. (Plus some specific models with bugs that the NSA took advantage of.)

  • I like Cisco hardware. And if it was purely a question of routing packets, I wouldn't consider an alternative to IOS. But... if I could run a *nix of some sort on Cisco hardware, that would be pretty neat. Opens up some other possibilities. (I REALLY wish I could just get something like a raspberry pi in a WIC card format. Cisco does make something similar, but the software is horribly locked down. I've rooted one, but... that didn't really gain me anything. Everything about those Cisco boards is uncooperative.)

  • Cisco IOS, although I suppose that's mostly because of the hardware. If there was actually an option, I'd probably run bsd or linux on my routers.

  • Deccan Traps volcanic activity is a better explanation for the KT extinction event than Chicxulub.

  • Religion is used as a scam by many people. It is also used in other ways by other people.

  • I try to avoid deep-fried food, but... there's a Salvadoran bakery a block from me, and they make the best empanadas I've ever had, so... "dos pollo y dos papa" (two chicken empanadas and two stuffed potato balls) and I make some Turkish coffee, is my favorite brunch. I try to keep it down to once a month, but lately it's been once a week...

  • I have no idea about "favorite", but a nice memory that immediately comes to mind...

My dad was a minister, when I was little we lived in the "parish house" behind the church. Decent sized church. I have great memories of going up in the attic of the church - all sorts of catwalks and different "rooms". And once my dad sent me all the way up the steeple, into the really narrow part with ladders & trap doors that was hard for an adult to get in. (I think he was having me check if there were any leaks?)

Always loved weird nooks in large buildings. Attics, cupolas, forgotten rooms, etc.

  • I remember the first time I heard about the web. My exact response was: "That sounds like a waste of bandwidth."

    Ha ha. Oops.

(In the early 90s I was completely obsessed with usenet. The graphical nature of web pages seemed like a terrible idea to me.)

  • If you spend a lot of time at the command line, then spaces in filenames are REALLY annoying. If you don't, it doesn't matter.

  • The screaming hairy armadillo is also good.

  • Cisco 2600 router.

  • FRESH sourdough is SO good! The next day... enh.

  • Oh, I've always liked VME. A lot of big computers (low-end supercomputers, exotic high-end servers) had a proprietary system bus, but multiple VME busses for IO. Very nice arrangement.

  • The first "real hardware" (ie: not a "personal computer") I had at home was a 3B2/300 (mid-80s AT&T 32 bit WE32000). Installing Unix on that was about a dozen floppies. (I still have them!)

Full Unix (SVR3) on a system with 2 meg of ram & a 40 meg hard drive...

  • Setting up the server I had involved booting & installing from (8mm) tape! Slowwwwwww.
