Not at all. It was as much a challenge as a question. I suspect some push back, I was just hoping I'd learn something useful. What I'm picking up is that it's not a fully formed set of ideals agreed upon by everyone. Which I suppose I shouldn't expect among leftists anyway lol. Thanks for the response.

That was helpful. I'm not convinced but it cleared up your personal ideas. I guess I see dangers that parallel mistakes made in the past by revolutionary governments. Things need to change but I have serious concerns. As much as I'd like to believe in a solarpunk future, what I'm reading doesn't instill much confidence.

Ok but you do see the problem with subsistence farming, no? Because at the end of the day, that's what it is. If there is no movement of food to where it's needed, and communities are insular, one bad harvest and people starve to death. You say you aren't anti-technology, but what I'm seeing is anti-tech.

Because what I see is knee-jerk reaction to tech and as you said, "self-reliance"which sounds like a cross between American exceptionalist frontier nonsense mixed with feudalism. It also parallels the anti-globalist wingnut paranoia. If that is supposed to be sustainability, no thanks. And no, I'm not an anarchist, I'm a socialist. Your ideals don't have a monopoly on a more sustainable future. It's like libertarians saying, "why do you hate freedom".

Linux works for roughly 80% of what I do. The BIG missing piece is audio production. The software is mostly okay, it's the actual audio system that's the problem. Audio on Linux sucks big floppy donkey dicks. Yes, I know all about JACK (complicated and never works the way you think it should), RT kernels, Pipewire, etc. It's all terrible.

I didn't say that. You're making assumptions. However, I don't take AGI as a serious risk, not directly anyway. AGI is a big question mark at this time and hardly comparable to a giant comet or pandemic, of which we have experience or solid scientific evidence. Could it be a threat? Yeah. Do I personally think so? No. Our reaction to and exploitation of will likely do far more harm than any direct action by an AGI.

Agreed, partially. However, the "techbros" in charge, for the most part, aren't the researchers. There are futurologists who are real scientists and researchers. Dismissing them smacks of the anti-science knuckleheads ignoring warnings about the dangers of not wearing masks and getting vaccines during the pandemic. Not everyone interested in the future is a techbro.

True. But we are still talking about what is essentially an alien mind. Even if it can do a good impression of a human intelligence, doesn't mean it is a human mind. It won't have billions of years of evolution and thousands of years of civilization and development.

Idk about societal collapse, but think about the amount of damage the World Wide Web and social media has and continues to do. Look at the mess cars have made of cities around the world over the course of a century. Just because it doesn't happen overnight, doesn't mean serious problems can't occur. I think we have 10 years before the labour market is totally upended, with or without real AGI. Even narrow AI is capable of fucking things up on a scale no one wants to admit.
