  • Authy is no good anyway. Keeps codes hostage with no way to back them up. So many great open source alternatives

  • I subscribe to more periodicals than most, I think probably almost twenty of them. I just cut out NYTimes, Washington Post, LA Times, Atlantic. I was growing disillusioned with some of their coverage- NYTimes desperately triangulating to the comfortable, safe, meaningless center, WaPo and LAT owned by oligarchs kissing Trump's ring. Atlantic just bores me lately- lots of opinion and not a lot of investigative coverage. But happy to add The Verge. I've read them daily since they were This Is My Next and don't intend to stop.

  • Honestly yes. You kinda got to let it go and stop worrying about the specifics. All the places and people blend together. I was listening to it driving and Serkis's delivery is just beautiful, but I still had to turn it off because I was zoning out

  • I had no background and nearly shat myself at a moment you can probably guess lol

  • I use Home Assistant DuckDNS and Nginx addons. DuckDNS handles the dynamic DNS updating when my ISP inevitably changes my IP address. Let's Encrypt for certificates. Nginx for proxying to IPs on my network

  • Buying music as CDs. Sure they were expensive at their peak, but they came in high quality, I could rip and do with them as I wished, while still having an offline copy. I have a lot of my old ones from childhood

  • Vertical would be if MS owned the carrier, the manufacturer, the operating system etc. Horizontal applies here where they own many interconnecting parts of the same layer of the market. Search, browser, email, etc, all being used to promote each other at the expense of competitors

  • I was actually a fan of Outlook for Android. Followed system dark mode before it was cool, had real multi account inbox, good wearos app, and other useful features. Then they started inserting Bing search into my long press menu system wide. And also recommending Edge when I clicked links. This kind of horizontal integration is just too baked into the company DNA. They can't help themselves, even when it actually harms them

  • 1,2,4,6,7,8,10,12,15 I'd say of any of them that cooking is the one that I think really makes a difference.

  • At least it theoretically has account portability...but yes, I fear people are setting themselves up to be enshittified again, as Cory Doctorow has brought up

  • I think it would be best for Firefox to be given greater autonomy, like Thunderbird has been. Thunderbird asks for donations and I'm happy to provide! I don't think it's a coincidence that Thunderbird started to thrive after being greater independence. Major new initiatives in user interface, mobile client after years of stagnation. Something at Mozilla central is deeply rotten.

  • Same, also the Readrops app. Less features but faster sync.

  • Yes, it's indefensible and bizarre. I was the one who first put forward the idea on their Connect forum. I don't understand their thinking on a lot of development priorities, and they don't seem to care too much about helping us understand.

  • Tablet UI is available in Nightly. It's actually pretty good!

  • I found it very odd how little they emphasize donations. Wikipedia, for example, has been quite successful with their pledge drive model, and like Wikipedia, Firefox has a natural platform to ask people to donate. I guess they are afraid of people switching to a browser that doesn't ask them to donate, where with Wikipedia, there is no real alternative

  • Are you on a lower specced device? I notice it can have high resource usage at times

  • I really liked Profit, a mid-90s drama about corporate intrigue. It was ahead of its time and I think would have been a much bigger hit if it came out 20 years later! It was canceled after only 1 season.

  • I remember kids telling me I was crossing my legs in a gay way. I asked them who said so, and they said their teacher. That was the first time I realized some bullies grow up to be teachers.

  • As the article mentions, Italy already did that! "Hold my prosecco"
