  • Almost everything in an emergency kit expires. But many name brand alkaline and non rechargeable lithiums are now rated for ten years shelf life. In addition there are rechargeable eneloop branded batteries rated for slower discharge rate.

  • Here are a couple of the articles the leaks informed: https://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2020/09/27/us/donald-trump-taxes.html https://www.propublica.org/article/the-secret-irs-files-trove-of-never-before-seen-records-reveal-how-the-wealthiest-avoid-income-tax

So I am conflicted because I'm a moral person who follows the law, but it's clear there are a lot of immoral people following the law who deserve to be exposed. I'm not sure who is right or wrong but I'm glad these articles exist. Just like I'm glad the Pentagon Papers, Snowden Leaks and Panama Papers made it out into the world.

  • I think the challenge is that with transportation, there are approaches to reduce the impact such as looking at the horizon, sitting in the front where the motion impact isn't as severe, etc. With VR there's less way around it, and fewer ways to redirect your perception (yet). Which is why the percentages are higher than car users

  • They added podcasts because it is comparatively cheap (they don't have to pay the record labels any royalties).

  • I use Bandcamp, which does allow you to stream purchases, though I prefer to download the flac files and stream via Jellyfin

  • Yes, I think the rabble would quickly fall in line against changing the electoral college. We saw them growing more accepting of LGBT people for a few years only to whiplash back to homicidal hatred once their high priesthood started ranting against the gays again. These poll results are kind of like an interesting Freudian slip though: like you said, when they're not paying attention a majority of Repubs can organically move to the reasonable opinion before the elites can apply their brainwashing again.

  • I had the same calculation a while ago. The feature where you could resume a podcast on my phone and Google Home speaker was tempting, but I stuck with Pocket Casts, which I just feel is more invested in their product. And the idea of listening to podcasts on Youtube is just not for me. Same reason I've never wanted podcasts on Spotify; podcast listening is something I want separate, not mixed with music.

  • Good point. It just means that only people who themselves are likely to be seeders can download from me. Which is better than nothing, but not ideal!

  • That is very depressing. The arms race between bad actors and repressive governments keeps whittling away at our right to privacy

  • Seems like some VPNs are pulling back from port forwarding. Was a bummer that Mullvad did, probably due to legal pressure

  • My mom barely uses desktop anymore. Everything on iPad essentially. I'm chuckling thinking of what she'd do to me if I tried to migrate her to linux.

  • Yep, I did! I also use its shizuku integration to install in the background, which is awesome

  • Inkscape just gets out of my way. I was using it for a quite particular application of drawing CNC mill plans though, and through that, I got into using it for other graphics stuff!

  • It's not perfect, but it's just miles ahead of anything else on the market in capability!

  • Desktop: Zotero, RStudio, Thunderbird, Sumatra PDF, Notepad++, NoMacs (image viewer), Espanso (text expander), qBittorrent, Inkscape

Android: FairEmail or K9 Mail, Authenticator Pro, Feeder, F-Droid, Pocket Casts, SD Maid

Multi-platform: Home Assistant, Wireguard, Syncthing, Jellyfin, Kodi, Samba, Firefox

Honorable mentions that don't have the best UX but are still hugely appreciated for existing: Joplin, QGIS
