I don’t know yet there have been several instances that shut down do to finances. Tell me how does something shut down due to finances if it’s not costly for the person? The Fediverse is also much larger than Lemmy.
Oh, it is absolutely understandable when it comes to the ads part. But there are other ways. Plus, there are ethical ads and Open Source ad companies, maybe that’s something to look into. I just know we need to explore ethical options and not just rely on donations.

Donations isn’t the way to go because most people don’t. I’ve seen about three polls that have had thousands of responses and the majority of people fell in the never donated category and many fell in the never donated and will not donate category.
Something feels wrong about leaving people’s hard work to donations, obviously it should be a part of the equation.
Depends on what the view of “mainstream” is. With Threads, Tumblr, Discourse looking to join the Fediverse within a years time it’s going to grow by millions.
It’s annoying when people use “algorithms” the Fediverse has algorithms. They are simply a tool. Awesome thing is that if any platform becomes hyper aggressive and looking to monetise users data there are ways to cut them off and there are other platforms and clients to use.
Showing people interesting posts isn’t harmful, it’s done on the Fedi currently.
Anyways, I believe adding millions more is good enough. It doesn’t need to be 100s of millions of active users
I’m totally with you. It’s honestly one of my best gripes with the culture of the Fedi. They hamstring admins. They don’t want capitalism. Admins are expected to beg for money when the vast majority of people using the service never donate. I believe as long as admins/devs are being reasonably transparent. To me it makes more sense to pay for services such as these as opposed to paying big companies. People should be rewarded for their hard work

I have read it and I can understand but it doesn’t encourage bad behaviour. It’s a tool, it will be used how people decide to use it. I also believe most of the concerns are disingenuous as there’s plenty of abuse that has happened and still has happened on Mastodon. Have you and those that agreed advocated for the abolishment of PM? That is significantly worse than QTs and search. That’s the primary vector of harm. What’s worse is that it’s hidden. Black users have been harassed via PMs
What was your reasons for agreeing with that assessment? It wasn’t just used for negativity. All of these are tools and they can be misused. Having a social media account in general opens people up for harassment

I don’t think so. That was their reasoning for not implementing Full-text search and Quotes yet other Fediverse platforms have had these features and I haven’t come across any reporting and or posts about these being used as tools for abuse.
