  • Snaps aren't as bad as people make them out to be. The only problem in Kubuntu is thflathead. Independent app to manage Snap security and access like flatseal. There is one, but you gotta install so much dependencies that you almost end up with the whole Gnome desktop. Otherwise it's a great solution for use in Ubuntu Core for example.

    I do prefer Flatpaks though.

  • Personally I prefer Kubuntu.

I find Mint's or Cinnamon's look and feel a little too outdated. Reminds me too much of Gnome 2.

And Gnome changed their whole desktop paradigm since Gnome 3. I find Gnome 4 more suitable for a tablet. I feel too constrained and limited by it on a desktop PC. It's awesome on my Surface Pro tablet though!

KDE Plasma kept the classic desktop paradigm like Windows, with a fresh modern look and tons of customizations. (Though I try to limit those as much as possible) You can configure it to your liking and add tons of really practical shortcuts. Its applications are also very powerful. Much more so than Gnome's I find, which are more minimalistic.

  • I think PopOS was made especially for the System76 hardware, no? While it can still work on other hardware, System76 hardware is the one it was meant for.

Honestly, Ubuntu is great. It's not bleeding edge where you can encounter yet unfixed bugs or other problems, and it's not old enough that you can run into problems where the software is so old it doesn't support the latest gaming stuff. It has great support from the community, it's widespread, and comes with tons of quality of life things like tools to install 3rd party drivers, like graphical drivers for NVidia. Why change?

  • Honestly the CAQ is the most unpopular provincial party out of all provinces right now. We're making memes about how they're going to lose the next elections. The second there's a partial election they lose a candidate. They're especially hated right now.

  • I hate the CAQ but you're giving a very bad description. They're maybe conservatives but nowhere near MAGA. They're not separatists either. They don't fear woke although they've called the Quebec Solidaire members that often. They just don't care about it.

    1. Ubuntu and derivatives. (I prefer Kubuntu, personally. It has even more support for things like HDR) I have a 3070 RTX and it's working just fine in Kubuntu.
    2. Good question! I would definitely back up the files first and reformat in EXT4 or BTRFS or whatever. Then when you install the games in Steam with the compatibility layer, you can specify where to install the games. Then check where saved games/profiles are located and possibly overwrite the files?
    3. Yes. No doubt.
  • But even if I trusted the current government to implement this with the right goals, I would never trust future governments not to abuse this system. I don’t think I’d really trust any sort of group to do this right. I’m already disappointed enough with our current democracy (in Canada) for not getting rid of first-pass-the-post, and I’m skeptical that much will change with interprovincial trade barriers (why not sooner?).

    Amen!

But the idea of a better implemented credit score to track only severe abuse of debt doesn’t seem entirely unreasonable to me. Obviously the current system is messed up and has major problems, but I feel like it could plausibly be fixed and done in a reasonable way. I think debt to buy a house (and maybe sometimes a car) is generally a good option to have. And I don’t know how you could offer this without tracking people who don’t pay. (Though maybe I’m wrong, maybe just going based off of income history is enough.)

It's funny because wealthy people don't have this problem. They want a loan for several millions? No problem! If they can't pay back the loan, it's not their problem though. It's the bank's problem. But hey, let's deny a loan for a lower-middle class worker for a $15k used car to get to work, or deny them the ability to have shelter because they fell on hard times once in their life ages ago.

You know what I mean? Sure there should be a way to find out of a person is trustworthy to pay back a loan, but at the same time we shouldn't be living in such an unfair system.
