Their designs were initially more open than Bambu is now, but went more proprietary over time - I had a Dreamer which still used a lot of “standard” parts. Despite that I ran into several issues that were either a pain to work around, or impossible, due to Flashforges attempts at keeping bits proprietary. I switched to Prusa after that, and have been happy ever since.

Yeah, that is the situation I am hoping to avoid. I was very close to buying a Flashforge some years back actually. Glad to hear you are happy with your current setup. :)

One more thing that could be considered is if one believes Prusa may die as a company. That would of course reduce the aspect of upgradeability. Personally I believe they are fine, and just growing slower (more organically? Than Bambu for example).

Yeah, the thought had crossed my mind. From what I've gathered, Prusa has been playing catch-up in terms of functionality and price competitiveness and for many, the CORE One did not fully meet their expectations. I know nothing of their financial situation, but I can only imagine the general 3D-printing market growing more and more, so hopefully they can maintain a sufficient market share to keep a sustainable business going.

If Prusa went under, I still think I would have a better chance of maintaining a functional printer than if e.g. I had a Bambu printer and they went under (although that does perhaps not seem so likely at the moment?).

• Print volume IS small. Not having at least 250x250 x/y has been a step back from my previous printer.

Hm, I don't think I can quite grasp how much of a difference it would make to have a couple of cm extra in each direction. For my actual planned projects, I know it will be sufficient (except for one, where none of the consumer grade printers would be, and I would need to splice multiple parts somehow). But I also know that the list of planned projects will expand much faster than I am able to plan, design and print...

Hm, in what way have you experienced any problems with this? I understand that it is not fully open source, but as far as I could tell, you can't go much more open without going with a Voron?

• I’d recommend getting the kit so you will get to know the printer better. However, CORE’s build process difficulty is yet to be seen. I built my own MK4S and it was a fun weekend project.

I would love to get the kit, both as a learning experience and a fun project. However, they are not shipping the kits until April/May or something like that, while the assembled printers start shipping in January. I don't think I want to wait that long.

What do you mean by well-being app? Any kind that relates to well-being or is there a specific feature set you are looking for?

Just a heads up if you are a user and thid matters to you: there was an announcement just four hours after you posted that says Mindful is going closed source.

My partner was on a Windows 11-compatible machine running Win 10. She doesn't keep up to date on computer stuff, and when prompted to upgrade to Win 11 she did, thinking it would be an upgrade. She hated it, and now she is running Linux Mint.

I also use Nextcloud gpodder - it's been set and forget in my case, very easy. Use Kasts on desktop, and AntennaPod on my phone.

While I don't know all the details, and as far as I know there has been no official statement that it will support Linux, the current rewrite of the codebase that is going on will at least allow much easier compatability with Linux. So there's hope :)

A smart watch certainly has more functionality to the wearer than a forgotten phone.

Off-topic, but: do you need some Garmin account to use these functionalities? I am looking into such a watch, but would not like to be dependent on some online service/account to use it.

I think this is exactly what happened to spotify wrapped this year - instead of doing the data analysis, they tried to have an llm/rag agent do it - and it’s hallucinating.

Interesting - I don't use Spotify anymore, but I overheard a conversation on the train yesterday where some teens were complaining about the results being super weird, and they couldn't recognize themselves in it at all. It seems really strange to me to use LLMs for this purpose, perhaps with the exception of coming up with different ways of formulating the summary sentences so that it feels more unique. Showing the most played songs and artists is not really a difficult analysis task that does not require any machine learning. Unless it does something completely different over the past two years since I got my last one...

It's insane that this bullshit can be pushed again and again and again. It gives me some comfort that they have still not succeeded, but they only need to succeed once, and if they are not blocked from putting this forward again, we would have to succeed again and again and again.

I use ledger. I have not automated so much outside of autocomplete macros in my text editor, but it doesnt't take too much time and forces me to look over my spend, so I like it. I will eventually attempt to build some kind of Dash-application for visualisation of the output, but have only started on the parsers so far.

I am happy running CalyxOS on my FP4. Bootloader is relockable as well, which is nice for security.

Oh boy, I got my units mixed up. I am used to reading bits per seconds as bps and bytes per seconds as B/s. However, the network activity on Linode is given in Mb/s. Now the numbers make a lot more sense, and the transfer speeds are well within the limits of my network and what I am used to seeing on my laptop on WiFi.
