Thanks - those were both enabled, and I've disabled them now. However, this still happens after I've done this and restarted the client. I also tried turning off peer exchange that I found together with these options under the Privacy tab, also without solving the issue.

I recently started organizing my music to use with Jellyfin and/or Navidrome. Since Jellyfin requires a particular folder structure, I used this, and I've also used MusicBrainz Picard to tag all my music so that it works better with Navidrome. I ended up just using Jellyfin as it suited my needs perfectly, and using it with a desktop client on my laptop (Feishin) and mobile client on my phone (Finamp).

The way Jellyfin requires it to be organised is the way I would've done it myself anyway:

In my experience, if you try to organize based on genres, you need to have a very defined sense of what genres everything you have is. Either you stick with very broad genres (Rock, Jazz etc.) or you get tons of subgenres that you quickly lose control over if you don't know exactly what is what. Since the clients I use have the possibility to sort by genre, I am planning on giving it an overhaul at some point, but then I will use very broad genres.

Ok, then I don't think that I am missing out on much based on my usage. But I can understand that it can be a pain to rely on some of these built-in systems if you use them a lot.

That is what the interface bind is supposed to prevent, or at least that is what I thought it was supposed to prevent. To avoid IP leaks in case of a lost VPN connection. I wonder if I've misunderstood it, or misconfigured it or something else.

I don't use these kinds of tools in private unless I have to, and when I do, I found that OnlyOffice has better compatability with .docx-files. I recently had to make some changes and format a .docx-file, and after struggling to make it look correct in LibreOffice*, it did not show up correctly in Word. Output was more or less the same in OnlyOffice as in Word, and after redoing it in OnlyOffice, it looked almost completely correct in Word.

Out of genuine curiosity from someone who has never used it, what are the features of Android Auto that are so good/useful that it alone would determine whether to use a custom ROM or not?

Yeah, I already have KDE Connect already setup, and it is quite nice. However, since this is for navigating a media station I would prefer to avoid having my smartphone nearby, as I will end up scrolling mindlessly like the drone I am. Getting the Wiimote working is also not entirely a project of utility, but something I consider to be an interesting and fun project, so while having options are good, I still want to accomplish this.

I also got 9/20, feeling certain about only a handful, and completely thrown off by others. Since all questions were yes/no, expected score would be 10/20, so my score correctly reflects that I had no real idea what was AI-generated or not. I expect the average score to be close to 10/20, skewed somewhat higher by those who might have a keen eye for some telltale signs of AI-trickery.

I tried that, but nothing really happened (i.e. no output). hid-wiimote is one of several things I couldn't fit into the whole picture I was trying to create for myself. I figured that, since I got it connected and could see the sensor data from the xwiishow command from xwiimote, that the module was loaded and I didn't need to pay more attention to it.

Ah, that didn't occur to me... good to know. I will use it mainly to navigate the Jellyfin UI, so hopefully it will be sufficient as it mostly consists of large images.

Good to know the feature is included in the Dolphinbar - I have been thinking about getting it in order to get the Wiimote working with Retroarch. But on the hardware I am running it on now, Wii-games are unplayable in Retroarch, so I have delayed that purchase.

Agreed. I made the switch after Mendeley pushed their online manager with only a new limited desktop client, which was awful. Couldn't believe I hadn't gone with Zotero in the first place. Originally only used for my thesis, now I use for work and personal interests as well.

My FP4 lasts two days on one charge, and charges fully in about 30 minutes. In most cases it shouldn't be an issue finding a 15-30 minute interval within two days where you don't listen to music in order to charge. Not all arguments against the removal are equally good, in my opinion.

However, I agree that dongles are wasteful. I burned through many such 3.5mm to Lightning on my previous iPhone. They had the durability of a snowman in Summer, and also cost about 10 bucks each for the official one. Since Fairphone claims sustainability as the main reason to remove the port, I'd love to see an actual calculation on the impact of broken ports vs broken dongles. I think the dongles will lose.

I've had a Fairphone 4 for just under a year running CalyxOS, and I am very happy with it. Not sure when / if CalyxOS will be available for FP5, but unless they have locked down anything, I don't see why that shouldn't happen. If I understand your post correctly, it is already available with e/OS/?

Maybe the specs are underwhelming, but with the FP4, it does not affect me the slightest based on my use case. Phones are more than good enough already. I do not play any games on my phone. Camera could be better - maybe it is on FP5? Is it the perfect phone? Nope, but at the moment, I think our choices are too limited if you want privacy and repairability. Supporting a company that pushes these kinds of phone is also a reason I went with this phone.

Swapable batteries are nice - I've not made use of it yet, but I am planning on getting one or two spare batteries for travel to keep in a printed case. In the EU, this will be mandatory in the future, but first form 2027. Other than that, I am happy with the ability to buy spare parts if something breaks. I can't see myself ever buying something that is deliberately unrepairable again when there is no reason it should be. I don't mind the lack of 3.5mm-port, which I know irritates a lot of people. If you swear to this, I can understand that this is disappointing. There exists an adapter, but my experience with these kind of adapters is that they quickly wear out. That was my experience with the iPhone and Apple's own adapters at least. I burned through four in 1-2 years.

Yeah, it's about finding the right balance for oneself. I know WhatsApp is very much needed many places, in the same way Facebook Messenger still is here (but to a much lesser degree than before, so there's hope!). Discord I also have, and will keep, but if I find communities I'm looking for on Matrix instead, I rather go there first. Amazon does not really work well in my country, so that is not a big deal to delete.

Regarding e-mails: to prevent lock-in, I set up custom domains that I use with Proton, that I can easily migrate to another service provider if needed in the future. I have one for personal communications, and use a mixture of catch-all aliases and SimpleLogin for new signups and accounts I want to keep. I also have one domain for semi-anonymous accounts more associated with my "online personas" than my real identity. This fits my threat level nicely.

I have also rid myself of streaming accounts now (last one is heading towards expiration within a couple of weeks). But instead of not consuming any media, I must admit I have taken to piracy again. The goal is to be a lot more conscious about the content I consume - too much time has been spent on mindless browsing for something to watch on Netflix and garbage movies / shows. Now I host Jellyfin locally, and I control exactly what content is there in the first place.

Over the course of 14 years, I had five different iPhones: 3GS in 2009, iPhone 4S in 2011, iPhone 6 in 2014, an iPhone XS in 2018 and now a work-only phone owned by my company which I don't know the model of - I barely use it. I also had a brief Android-spell from mid-2010 until the release of the 4S with an HTC Legend which was a truly awful experience, and turned me off from Android for a long time until I bought a Fairphone 4 for personal use end of last year and installed CalyxOS on it. No regrets making the switch.

But yeah, I liked iPhones for a while. My prejudice against Android was unfortunate, but HTC Legend was a truly awful phone that lost support for updates quickly after I got it, and was also not prioritized by the modding community. I was going to get an HTC Desire, but they were sold out at the time, and I was about to go into the military, so waiting was not an option. If I got the Desire, I think the experience would've been better, but instead I sat with the impression that you could not count on long-term support for Android-devices, and that the hardware was rubbish.

I adopted iPhones at the same time as I departed from my teenage more tech-oriented years in favor of more social stuff at high school and university, so avoiding spending time on customization through the whole "you get what exactly we want you to get"-vibe of Apple worked fine for me then. It is the same shit that eventually drove me mad and made me ditch both iOS and macOS last year in favor of Android and Linux.

The hardware itself is quite good. They lasted increasingly longer for my use, but battery performance was shit towards the end and I was not going to spend a fortune changing the battery. My new phone has an easily changeable battery. Other than repairability, new features of smartphones have not excited me for many years.

The Apple ecosystem never really worked for me. I had iCloud only because the price point was much better than Dropbox for my use when I made the change. Other than that I really didn't use much of their stuff, which made the transition a lot easier than it could've been. Exporting iCloud-stuff from a non-Apple device was a chore though... But since I also did not use much of the ecosystem, that was also a big "why bother"-point. But my main grievance is the lack of openness and control over your own device. I also have an old iPad now that sits with no use cases, because I can't get a recent enough iOS-version installed, and I can't install another operating system as far as I know. It's so wasteful.

Yes, proper regulation is difficult. My (limited) impression of EU regulation is that they often do have enough technology know-how to make regulations that to a large degree make sense, but not enough for them to be fool-proof. This is at least the case in the industry that I work in, which is also heavily regulated by EU. I don't know anything about the processes of making these regulations, and whether those shortcomings generally are the result of sneaky lobbying (most certainly this must be the case at least sometimes) or lack of know-how.

I agree that the it would've been best to never have gotten into the mess in the first place, but these are sins of the past that are not undone now. I, like many others, was for a long time ignorant of the extent of data collection, and did not have the knowledge to fully reflect on the potential consequences (I signed up for Facebook as a teenager). And it's not like all these companies have been very transparent about how much they collect and where the data goes and is used for. The vast majority of netizens still do not fully understand the scope of this, and are also not in a place to be able to apply best practice infosec principles.

My rant is about how unnecessarily time consuming and difficult the process of cleanup is, when you already find yourself in this situation, despite regulations that gives you the right to have your data deleted. Most people would not want to spend this amount of time on this, and as such, the tactics applied by these corporations work.
