  • I had to look it up (dont know much about it), but in the Wikipedia entry it notes:

Time named the Hungarian Freedom Fighter its Man of the Year

    And

In 2006, Hungarian Prime Minister Ferenc Gyurcsány referred to this famous Time cover as "the faces of free Hungary" in a speech marking the 50th anniversary of the uprising.

Which makes me think they were later vindicated. But maybe I'm missing something.

  • Global population? Iirc it was around 70k years ago that something (or some combination of things) nearly wiped out all of our ancestors, down to a few thousand. I believe that was initially thought to be an event started by volcanic eruption, but other data contradicts that (or at least points to it not being the only problem).

Smaller scale? The great plague was only a few hundred years ago, that was 100k people pretty localized. Same with Marseilles a few decades later. A few decades after that was a plague in Moscow, twice the toll. Late 1800s was another Russian flu, with a million casualties.

Covid we were able to have enough people not be morons about to not completely (or near totally) wipe us out, but there was also competent leadership after it began (but not early on).

Then now we've got bird flu, mpox, not to mention the ridiculously stupid returns of polio and measles.

I'm not a historian or expert in infectious diseases, FWIW, just noting that there have been some bad times for the general population both small and large scale over time.

  • Added ingredients is the usual culprit, that said - some barrel pastes use a wheat base, which can then be a problem. Good ones use beeswax.

Some double distilled can be a problem for me. I obviously have no way of testing other than bad experiences, but I have yet to find a triple distilled thats an issue.

Short answer - "should" and "does" are two separate issues. "Should" isn't good enough when it comes to a medical issue, something I've learned the hard way with being gluten free.

  • Considering the time you were at reddit (not too different from mine), I think you'll find Lemmy like reddit was in your earlier times there.

What I mean by that is generally more thoughtful and reasonable discussion (generally), smaller communities, more generalized (but specific stuff is accepted, so "all ttrpg is good here" vs "thats pathfinder, this is for 5e only!", as an example.

Welcome and I hope you enjoy it here!

Also, if you come across a server you think fits better as a home base - make an account, see if it fits. You dont have to stay in one spot just because its where you made your first.

  • The mods at 196@lemmy.blahaj.zone decided they didnt like the rules at Lemmy.blahaj.zone, and wanted to move to Lemmy.world.

Lemmy.world is.... We'll just say not great for lgbtqia+, especially in consideration of the "teach the controversy" rule that was coming from the admins and is "currently being reworded".

Those mods closed 196@lemmy.blahaj.zone, and tried to force everyone to .world. Thus was met with... Disagreement.

They reopened 196@Lemmy.blahaj.zone, but the damage was done, and trust was lost. !onehundredninetysix@lemmy.blahaj.zone was created as the safe alternative from the mods who wanted the ability to allow problematic commenters.

So thats about the story there.

  • As an american, a slight correction.

Read Next: about 40% of Americans puzzled about why nobody likes them anymore. Another 40% puzzled about why anyone still likes them. 20% didn't understand the question, and refused to elaborate.

  • Its a different story overall, and just to say its actually much better than I was expecting.

The character designs match, but it is absolutely not the MCU story. Norman Osborn becomes Peter's mentor, not Stark, which should speak to how different it becomes.

  • I thought the second was not as good as the first

That is a pretty rare take! Most consider it one of the examples where a sequel is better than the original (and T2 is considered one of the best action movies of all time).

  • and says, "this is the exact same thing he did last time, why is the media reporting on it,"

They said "why is the media pretending this was new", not "Why are they reporting on this".

These are very different statements. You are suggesting they said the media shouldn't bother reporting on it. What they actually said was that it should be pointed out that there are many repeats, and shouldn't be treated as though its happening for the first time.

I think that is the root of the misunderstanding here.
