  • Dems had a super majority 3 times in as many decades, and the only meaningful legislation they managed to pass in that time was a Republican (Mitt Romney’s) healthcare plan. Anything else they got done only lined the pockets of rich and corporations, nothing for the working class.

Compare that to the absolute torrent of shit being done in just 2 weeks with a Republican supermajority.

Dems either don’t know how to use the power that voters do give them, or they choose not to. Either way, it leaves many people to feel totally without representation.

  • Yeah, seems that’s the point. Old enough to competently perform what they’re told, but too young to realize the gravity of the situation and how wrong it is to partake in it.

  • Well my comment was about how Pelosi helped defeat the progressive Jessica Cisneros in TX, by giving tons of DNC money to Henry Cuellar, a corporate shill. Both dems, but the DNC tipped the scales in favor of the neoliberal, to the detriment of democracy. All too often this is what happens in primaries where there is a challenger from the left. No worries though, that isn’t a race I would expect those from abroad to know anything about, just using it as an example.

The guy you’re talking about, Fetterman - actually I think he has been making moves to become more establishment, and has likely gained allies as a result. AIPAC is the Israeli lobby group that buys all of our politicians so that our government does whatever they want - I don’t think they even needed to give Fetterman any money though, he seems like a rabid Zionist from the start. This attitude signaled his departure from progressive politics - we saw the exact same thing with Kyrsten Sinema, who got into office as a “progressive leftist” but then immediately went mask-off right wing. Establishment/centrist politicians love people like Fetterman and Sinema because they can be used to kill any legislation that is “in danger” of passing, when it might result in things like higher taxes on the rich and corporations, or more stringent regulations to protect people that might cost businesses some money. This is a key factor regarding how corporations and other private interests have captured our government, such that we presently live in a corporate oligarchy.

  • You’re right, but historically anytime someone primaries a Dem from the left the DNC will look to bury the challenger in favor of keeping the establishment figure in office. Sometimes we get an AOC, but usually it’s a Cuellar.

  • I see what you’re saying, and sadly your analogy does fit the current situation. To add to it, the Dems were in the driver’s seat a few miles back - they saw a shallow, placid lake just off the side of the road that they could have rolled the bus into to safely extinguish the flames. Unfortunately, the senate parliamentarian placed a sticky note on the dash that said you can’t drive the bus into large bodies of water. So the poor Dems had no choice but to floor the accelerator and speed right past the bus people’s salvation. Besides, they promised nothing fundamental about the bus’ trajectory would change under their stewardship, and by golly that’s the one promise they intend to keep!

  • Yeah, I think it might be. We already knew full well what republicans were planning. It’s been obvious for decades now, and they often told us literally (heritage foundation, proj 25, etc.)

Dems could have stopped this in a variety of ways, but chose not to because they are too addicted to the corruption and bribes. We got “Other priorities”, “look forwards not backwards”, etc. when we needed things like paid family leave, prosecuting war criminals and traitors, codifying roe, and significant campaign finance reform.

I’d say this is worse, because Dems are so disingenuous about it. They got elected into a supermajority multiple times with a mandate to give us meaningful support and then once they got into office consistently did nothing. At least the republicans are honest about their bigotry and hate-filled platform, and pursue it vigorously when elected. Again, I wish the Dems did the same.

  • I get your sarcasm, but let’s be clear - Dems have had a supermajority 3 times in the past 25 years, and we got none of this shit. They’re full of crap when it comes to fulfilling campaign promises. Wish we could say the same for republicans.

  • I strongly believe that the vast majority are quite far left, and stand by in abject horror at how far rightward the establishment politicians and mainstream media have dragged the Overton window. We really needed something like the Voting Rights Act from Biden admin, but much more - chase down eligible voters and make them vote, just like in Australia. Anyway, agreed with you - it would be nice to know for certain where the country actually stands on policy.

  • Yeah, but that won’t last forever. Give progressive dems a chance to campaign in earnest for their platform, without the chains of establishment pro-corporate policies around their necks, and you might be surprised how quickly the 90-million non-voters come around.
