I haven’t had any tears. Hard to say whether it’s my VCR or the tapes doing the jamming. I’m not very tech savvy, and I was a kid when these were all in use so I haven’t learned how to fix these things. When something doesn’t work right, I usually just take the top off the VCR and wiggle a part, and all goes smoothly after that.

These are great, but they don’t explain what a crypto coin actually is.

I still own a VCR and a vast collection of VHS tapes. I mean, I also pay for streaming services, but without the old 90s commercials for Disney World and previews for movies that were released in 1995, the movies just don’t hit the same.

But what you said there is literally the end of my understanding of what crypto is. It has something to do with computers solving math problems, and somehow that’s worth money.

True, but I worry that only very left individuals are really talking about this probability. In the big picture, centrists and right wingers don’t believe it will happen. Mother Jones is left, but it’s also a large media company. If we can get more media companies to report on what we think is obvious, it will force the centrists and “I don’t do politics” people to hear it. I hope this article is the start of the discussion in the media, which will take time to happen, unfortunately.

It’s an interesting thought experiment!

We can just look to indigenous cultures for this. They’ve been doing it for tens of thousands of years before being colonized. Like, indigenous Australian cultures sustained themselves for 60k-100k years without ruining their environment while also living in commune-type societies. Native North/South Americans did it too. We can hand off our kids to untouched/minimally touched cultures to learn how to relate to the environment and each other. There will always be human conflict. It’s how we handle that conflict that we need to learn again, and how to appropriately handle conflict needs to be retaught by those who know how to do it.

Thank you for the encouragement. I do need to do this. Especially with the current climate in the USA.

What?? Really?? That’s horrible! Why are Americans wanting to move toward a colonist/Empire future? We were taught in schools (superficially, I guess?) that that kind of national behavior is BAD and caused a ton of violence and death. I am so baffled.

I vividly remember reading in English class both fiction and nonfiction stories about the atrocities done by the British empire in India and Africa. We all read Anne Frank. We learned in “socials studies” class about the tragedies committed against indigenous Americans. Where did all of this come from?

Agreed. The fact that we have to depend on structurally patriarchal/domineering justice system is the problem… It’s a whole mess.

Communes (and my run-away-to-the-forest idea above) will never work without the proper cultural education and social rules to prevent that kind of behavior. To relearn how to build a socially sustainable culture, we should look to cultures that have been around for thousands of years and have done it successfully. It would be a really hard transition because it requires a complete restructuring of how we view other people and how we relate to them. Which, honestly, I think we should be doing anyway, commune or not.

Great point. Probably a filtering done by our national media so that any interaction with global entities makes it sound like we’re being praised….

I have! That show absolutely terrifies me, since yeah, a small minority of people convinces a ton of other people to do violence against women in a way that feels very USA 2025. But that’s a great point! When the main character realizes her power, she goes far in protecting herself and others.

It’s difficult because our culture trains us from birth to never realize we can fight back. Like, I have a strong suspicion that if I was suddenly attacked, my brain would dump all ideas of fighting back and just freeze, which of course allows the violence to happen. I don’t think this is a “natural state” of being for women or any person. I think we were just trained this way, which makes it a very difficult mindset to overcome; I believe that this is by design.

So…how do we retrain women and girls to respond with a #traumatizethemback mindset? Seems impossible to do this at the cultural level, at least for several generations.
