  • Are you saying there's no cats in heaven? Or hell, I'm sure they're there too

  • Don't say that on social media. If you're gonna do that, just do it. Climate activists have done it before and it's most certainly more effective than the majority of climate activism I see.

  • I don't know of FOSS "one-stop-shops" but these services should have APIs you can use and write scripts to mass-delete. It wouldn't be particularly hard or time-consuming, and you can also publish your scripts so other people can use them instead of writing your own.

  • I think you have an extremely online view of "leftist political spaces" because I have never even heard this guy's name mentioned in any real life context, and I've been a very politically active communist since I was a teenager.

  • I guess you could keep your phone in a faraday bag and take it out when you need to make a payment. But then you'd be liable to be charged any time you have your phone out, unless you go out of your way to remove the card from the case, which defeats the point.

  • Yeah sort of. I have a "to-read" folder of anything I've been meaning to read (believe it or not, it constantly grows and rarely shrinks...) and I use my top-level bookmarks bar for stuff to look at, usually cool FOSS projects I stumble across and want to try out. I don't use it the exact way you talk about though, eg I usually don't edit the bookmark name but the webpage title is usually descriptive enough for me.

  • I assume any Linux or *BSD distro will work, especially one with Docker (which is most/all of them?) so you don't have to worry about things being packaged for your distro so long as there's a docker image. My server is Alpine Linux.

  • Not their fault that other people are willing to pay millions for a banana stuck to a wall. If you can make money that way why not?

  • Once got a wrong number text from a human on Signal but that's it

  • Oh you mean without downloading the files. I thought you just meant cloud sync. Yeah I have my entire Nextcloud downloaded and the folder is synced by the daemon, so I do just use the files as normal local files. Never tried without downloading all the files

  • Nextcloud works that way for me. I access my Nextcloud files at ~/nextcloud without any hitch, and changes sync immediately. You do have to self-host, but I'm sure there are also some public instances you can use. I know Disroot hosts one.

  • Most vegan hate is just reactionary and you should disregard it. It's because vegans force omnivores to confront the reality of where their food comes from, to confront climate science, and to confront your own personal social responsibility. I think it's very silly to be concerned with being a "good vegan". If you don't want to get into arguments then just eat your vegan food and move on. If people take issue with you deciding to eat the food you want to eat, and having boundaries around not wanting to eat certain foods, especially given that these decisions are based on your own moral compass, then they are complete dickheads you should not be around anyway.

I also don't think there's anything morally wrong with being a naggy/pushy vegan. I don't try to convince anyone to go vegan just because I figure if they want to then they will, if there's resistance then I have better ways to spend my time. If they're vegan-curious they're always welcome to ask me about it. I think whether or not you try to make other people go vegan is a personal choice, and a political choice about how to most effectively enact your politics.

I think trying to have a more progressive social circle will help you, because I have honest to god never experienced one of my friends taking issue with me being vegan, and several of my omnivorous friends have confessed to me unprompted that they feel bad about eating animal products and "should" eat more vegan food (I don't ever even talk about veganism except for just mentioning that I'm vegan when we're getting food together). Like I said, if they take issue with the food you choose to eat/food you refuse to eat for moral reasons, they are just plain dickheads and you should stop being friends with them.

  • The reason why Fairphone charges so much is because their selling point is ethics, and they claim they put sustainability of raw materials and fair pay for workers first. Whether or not they check that goal, companies like Google, Apple, etc definitely keep their prices low by paying workers in the global south pennies.

  • Can someone give me a rundown (or link to a good one) of a comparison between subsonic, jellyfin, plex, and these other services that let you host your own streaming service?

  • Sometimes I laugh on purpose to indicate that I'm joking.

  • How long before some big tech corpo appropriates it and advertises one of their products as "not enshittified" or whatever

  • I know it's officially for-hey-oe, but I always say forge + joe cause I find it easier. I used to say "forjo" (like "forge" ending in an "o", or "for joe" sped up) as well.
