VPS in order to go offshore due to being a political organiser/having state interest in me. If my domestic state was not interested in me I would use a home lab though; it'd wind up cheaper in the long run I reckon, better performance as it's bare metal (though my VPS is KVM so performance hit is negligible), and better control since you both own and have physical access to the server. For most people's purposes I'm sure an old laptop or a raspberry pi would work fine so you don't need to splash out either. I probably wouldn't suggest a VPS unless you have the same threat model as me (ie likely to get raided & server seized, or likely to have active monitoring of your internet activity via ISP); I don't really think it's worth the money long term. Or I guess if you do just have general privacy concerns you could rent a VPS in a country known for decent privacy, but just for peace of mind reasons instead of a tangible threat to you.
Edit: Also depends on what you use the server for. If you want it to not be linked to your real identity you'd probably want a VPS, otherwise every time someone emails you they find out the IP address of your home network.
It's not migrating my emails I need, it's forwarding new emails sent to my old address. I mostly use duck addresses these days so luckily I can just change the address ddg forwards to in future, but prior to starting to use ddg's email service I'd have a ton of services I need to change the email address for. Proton offers this service but I'd have to pay a subscription for it, and obviously I need it indefinitely if some service sends me an email eg 5 years down the line. Of course emails sent to an old email 5 years later are probably not important but it's just convenient to not have to log into Protonmail to check if I've got any mail sent to my old address.
It is a bit nuts how hard it is to switch email accounts. Although conveniently I believe gmail has a forwarding feature. Protonmail unfortunately doesn't in its free tier (I recently switched from protonmail to self-hosted postfix/dovecot), and paying for a protonmail subscription just to forward my emails to a different email seems to defeat the point of paying for an email service.
In the US maybe, but there's been plenty of antifa activity in eg Europe due to the sharp rise of the far-right. Antifa show up whenever there's fascist demos to counter them.
Antifa is a movement, not some centralised formally defined organisation. It's just short for anti-fascist. Plenty of antifascist groups still exist. Any group that labels itself as anti-fascist is antifa.
That makes sense. It feels a bit mad that the difference between getting pwned super easy vs not is something simple like that. But also reassuring to know, cause I was wondering how I heard about so many hobbyist home labs etc getting compromised when it'd be pretty hard to obtain a reasonably secured private key (ie not uploaded onto the cloud or anything, not stored on an unencrypted drive that other people can easily access, etc). But if it's just password logins that makes more sense.
How are people's servers getting compromised? I'm no security expert (I've never worked in tech at all) and have a public VPS, never been compromised. Mainly just use SSH keys not passwords, I don't do anything too crazy. Like if you have open SSH on port 22 with root login enabled and your root password is password123 then maybe but I'm surprised I've never been pwned if it's so easy to get got...
I just use Vim out of habit. I've been using it as my main text editor since I was like 13 or so, maybe more like 10 I don't really remember. It works perfectly well for the vast majority of my use cases. I use Jetbrains IDEs if I feel I need the power of a full IDE. Jetbrains has an IdeaVim plugin if you want it to be a modal editor, or if your fingers are accustomed to Vim keybindings.
You can easily get a case with an optical drive slot if you just get an older case. You can fit an older case with more modern components just fine. My current PC case is from 2017 and has an optical drive slot (which is fitted with an optical drive—though I'm afraid I've not used it in years...)
As for laptops with ports, they're out there but you may have to either get an older one or pay more money annoyingly. I wish it was standard for laptops to have ethernet ports. My modern, fairly mainstream trend-following laptop has all the other ports I need (USB obviously, HDMI, and 3.5mm headphone jack).
I think this is just irresponsible to say; the liberation of the working class is the job of the worker alone. I can't go into detail on Lemmy for obvious reasons, but actually existing resistance networks of working class people do deal with and help each other with things like house raids. If you are at the point where you're receiving this kind of state repression, you will also be well connected enough to get the support you need. I get my house raided occasionally, my comrades get raided semi-frequently, we all deal with it and live with it just like every other revolutionary throughout history who has stood up to an oppressive state and seen capital with its mask off.
If it's low privacy needs (ie you don't have a state threat model), Signal is completely fine. I use it to talk to my friends. I also use Matrix, though federated Matrix isn't the best for privacy either due to the amount of metadata that leaks through federation. But federated Matrix is also fine for the kinds of things you would use eg Discord or IRC for.
If you do have a state threat model, I personally think SimpleX is ideal for that, but it doesn't have as much of a userbase so you probably need people who care enough (eg people actively under threat) to switch to a new platform. Whereas most people I know are already on either Signal or Matrix, and I'm not having particularly sensitive conversations with them either so both work fine.
I know some people who largely do exist off grid, but in any case, for asylum claims it's common to claim asylum after having already crossed the border of the target country without going through the checks. My friends who are asylum seekers have done that. I imagine in general you'd have less chance of being deported if you're already living in the country vs trying to cross the border.
Stealing is morally neutral, but can be a dick move if it's against individuals/results in the dispossession of something a person needs or cares about. But shoplifting/stealing from businesses is fine. They consider it inventory loss the same as if they dropped a bottle on the floor. It's written into their spending calculations and is an expected part of business. And quote unquote "small businesses" still had enough capital to start a business in the first place, and are ultimately insignificant anyway since the petit-bourgeoisie is doomed to forever either become big bourgeoisie or become proletarianised/unpropertied; proletarianisation is a progressive force and I'm not bothered if members of the petit-bourgeoisie become proletarianised, not that they will anyway purely from someone shoplifting lol.
Just follow the standard advice. Don't shit where you eat (don't shoplift somewhere you'd be upset if you got banned from) is the main one I adhere to. If you're only shoplifting small amounts I wouldn't worry about cops either, for small amounts they'll just ban you from the store, at least where I live idk about everywhere.
For individuals, I wouldn't steal from them if you care about your relationship with them. If they find out they'll probably be upset. If I found out someone stole from me I'd mostly be upset at the dishonesty. So it's good that you've been honest with your mom and are going to tell your brother. If it were me, I would be thinking, if you need something from me you could've just asked. Although it sounds like you're not stealing because it's something you particularly want or need, but just because you find stealing fun. In which case I would say just try to limit your stealing to shoplifting, or piracy if it scratches the same itch. Or steal from people you find particularly contemptible I guess.
