  • Worse, they were pure PR. A way for a company to say "look how green we are, we are offsetting all our emissions!". Which, of course, they did by finding a shady company that "offset" the most for the least amount of money.

I wonder how many times the same tree was paid for by companies to "offset" their CO2.

It doesn't even kick any can down the road. It's throwing cash at a tree while rolling coal.

  • Yup. Not only that, years earlier they were under investigation by the doj for their chloroprene emissions.

Denka's arguments here are ridiculous. They are trying to play like chloroprene isn't horribly toxic. It's a human pesticide. No emissions are safe, and that means they can't run their 60 year old cancer factory without rebuilding. Booo hooo.

  • Basically yes.

Most libertarians are both profoundly selfish and woefully uninformed about history, theory of government, etc. proud ancaps (which is the loud majority) are dumbasses that swallowed koch propaganda. "I got mine" is the real libertarian credo.

  • I've met more than a few libertarians that view an essential role of the government is banning books that mention gay people.

A lot of libertarians are just Republicans mad the Republican party isn't fascist enough. Their "small government" ideals often include government functions like making sure everyone worships Jesus.

FFS, I've seen idiots proudly waving the libertarian flag AND a thin blue line flag.

  • There's also so many issues that are way more popular that the Democrats are flubbing on by focusing on the fucking border of all things.

Abortion, climate change, cost of living, housing costs, medical costs, ect. It's a limitless field of popular problems that need fixing and instead of focusing on any of them, the hill they are dying on is funding and arming ICE? In the wake of calls for police reform, they want to empower some of the worst most fascist cops in the US?

These old dog Democrats are the dumbest most of of touch politicians out there.

  • Not fucking good, the bill is hot garbage and the fact that so many Senate Democrats and Biden support it is an embarrassment.

It's a bill criminalizing a non-problem that creates a worse issue than what it "solves". We don't need or benefit from a more militaristic boarder and xenophobic/racist rhetoric about people crossing.

This garbage kills people and promotes human trafficking. The bill Democrats should be supporting is loosening the boarder and opening pathways to citizenship. We don't need more detention centers to separate children from their families.

This bill is the same as if the Democrats put up an anti abortion bill just to show that the Republicans don't care about stopping abortions. Democrats implementing Republican's fascist policies is not what we need. Not even as a "gotcha".

  • Yup. Nobody needs advice from advisors negatively impacted by this ruling. It's a common sense regulation, telling people the best financial move is buying their junk financial implements is unethical and now illegal.

This CRA would make it so a pay day lender could tell their marks the best financial move is taking out their terrible loans.

  • Nope.

A pardon stops all punishment from the judicial system. You don't have to plead guilty and criminal proceedings stop. A pardon further undoes any legal handicap (for example, you can own firearms again).

That said, if you accept a pardon you can't plead the fifth when it comes to details related to the crime you've committed.

There's also a commutation, which is weaker than a pardon. Instead of having the crime fully forgiven you are simply let out of jail with the understanding you committed the crime and must face follow up consequences (like not being able to own firearms).

Finally, there are also conditional pardons. Those are ones where the president could impose a "you must plead guilty" style rule before the pardon can be applied. He could also apply a rule that says "you must perform 10 jumping jacks".

Pardon powers are some of the most broad we have in the US.

About the only limitation is you can't pardon for future crimes.

  • Yeah, and that will be another problem. Even with this format, most people aren't going to watch the debate. What they'll watch is clips from the debate from their favorite media outlet.

Biden isn't a great debater, so I'm sure there'll be plenty of clips of him looking like an idiot. And, well, Trump is an idiot and his supporters know and don't really care about that... So... Yeah. These debates will ultimately be pointless. The two are known entities that really don't need exploring. A format change, though, would hopefully help with the 2028 elections.

  • The terms here are how the commission should have been running debates from the beginning.

Trump will never agree to these terms as they undercut his entire debate strategy. With no crowd there, Trump can't feed off their responses. With the mic time limit he can't interrupt and interject like he wants to do. That leaves him with his rambling disconnected thoughts.

  • We aren't talking about a toxic waste dump or a steel mill. This is a grocery store attic.

I'd agree that if they rented the space to her that would be unethical as they aren't providing essential utilities like water and sewage. However, this location was likely safer and more private for her than camping out on the street. Her situation was not improved by being evicted. She was harmed. That's why it's unethical to evict on discovery.

  • Legal problems? Yes. Ethical problems? Fuck no.

She was living rent free pulling resources from a company that likely fights against social programs for homelessness. That, to me, 1000% ethical.

It would only be unethical if the US has an adequate social safety net.

  • Senate is a 6 year term so he'll be 88 at the end if he survives.

Besides just being with his family, the most important thing he could be doing is finding a replacement with similar politics to him and endorsing the shit out of them. Otherwise when he dies it will be a blood bath that might not end up with a progressive like him.
