You gonna demand sanctions for every single country that hunts a wild species that's classified as "least concern"? I think you'll struggle to find any countries that don't pull shit that's at least as inhumane and environmentally harmful as killing some 100-150 whales per year.
I very intentionally did not say that whaling is good, because it's not. However, I believe that it is hypocritical to call for the banning of Icelandic whaling without also applying the same zeal to banning other forms of harmful commercial seafood, and that whaling is somewhat used to distract from the harms of more "normal" seafood.
Mink whaling is more responsible and sustainable than a lot of commercial fishing - compare the impacts of hunting a species that's classified as "least concern" with deep-sea trawling, the hunting of certain endangered species of tuna, or the use of the eggs and/or young spawn of endangered fish as caviar or whitebait!
Whaling definitely needs to go but (non-Antarctic) whaling gets an oversized amount of attention and it's not unusual for people who are opposed to it to be financially supporting even more destructive forms of kaimoana.
The US government doesn't believe that international laws apply to them - and they're kinda correct, nobody has a big enough military to really stand up to them.
I just kinda liked beehaw when I was first switching to lemmy - was one of the first few people to join the Te Wai Pounamu community when it initially got started a few months back though!
I'm not confident saying for sure without reading the actual paper - it really depends on how PPO interacts with the flavanols, but at the end of the day denaturing the PPO with heat should make it a non-issue. Keep in mind though that bananas are far from the only smoothie ingredient with PPO!
Is the whole Amazon obsession just a North American thing? I've bought like 4 things from them in my life and nothing since about 2016 and I haven't felt at all inconvenienced. From my perspective it's not too hard to either buy from local companies, directly from foreign manufacturers, or from aliexpress if all else fails; that may just be because I'm not American though!
I'm not in the right headspace to read any studies on it but based on my understanding of how food works on a chemical level I'd say it's a safe bet to say that the difference in preparation is mostly down to heat and steeping time.
If you steep for longer it gives the water more time to absorb flavanols.
If you use a temperate that is too high you'll denature or destroy the flavanols, whereas if you use a temperature that's too low they may not dissolve into the water as readily necessitating a longer steeping time.
Since giving waterboarding a go I've found myself disgusted by any government that allows the use of waterboarding on anybody - governments that encourage it are even worse, and the way the Americans handled Gitmo is fucking disgraceful.
Ugh can't even come to lemmy to escape real life - spent most of Monday morning denaturing/counteracting PPO in my uni food science lab!
Polyphenol oxidase is the enzyme responsible for browning in shit like apples and potatoes when cut and exposed to air.
I haven't read the study linked in the OP yet (and I'm far too sad and intoxicated for it right now) but in other fruits/vegetables it's pretty easy to deactivate PPO through application of some combination of Vitamin C (converts quinones back to their phenol form and reacts with oxygen before it can get to the PPO) and heat (which actually denatures the PPO enzymes).
When we were denaturing PPO in potatoes in a lab setting we simply blanched the sliced potatoes in 90°C water for 5 minutes before placing it in an ice bath until cool.
I used to think that until I tried going without my prescribed cbd oil and I definitely noticed that I was a bit more anxious and had more unwanted side effects from the flower that I'm also prescribed!
Gonna add on to your comment by suggesting ESP-based lights running WLED for any fans of smart lighting; having smart lights that run FOSS firmware, don't need an external internet connection to work, and integrate well with reactive lighting solutions like HyperHDR and LedFX is pretty dang nifty!
The Green Party in my country is blocking the development of green alternatives to the industry that is one of the highest emitters of greenhouse gasses and various other pollutants (there's a reason most of our rivers are no longer safe to swim in and the levels of certain cancer-causing compounds are 10-100x the EU safe limit in some areas' water supplies), while private corporations and the main right-wing party are pushing for their legalisation.
A certain local indigenous group (which is technically a registered corporation) doesn't really like people mentioning the fact that they're currently driving an endangered native animal extinct by turning the only area they inhabit into dairy farms.
Also most of the politicians in this country are liars and/or sociopaths, but that kinda goes without saying lol
