  • I thought this was an inciteful comment. Language is a kind of 'view' (in the model view controller sense) of intelligence. It signifies a thought or meme. But, language is imprecise and flawed. It's a poor representation since it can be misinterpreted or distorted. I wonder if language based AIs are inherently flawed, too.

    Edit: grammar, ironically

  • The cynical part of me agrees, but one win that could be achieved is a pervasive anti big tech culture built on a foundation of recent corporate betrayals. The more the tech companies push, the more alienated the customers. Will they keep buying? Probably. Will they stay loyal when other options arise? Probably not.

  • I believe this is true. Progressivism is just one thing I like about the state. It's also gorgeous. Big Sur, San Francisco, Yosemite, sequoias, numerous vineyards, craggy beaches, and scenery that can transition from valley to plains to desert to mountains in just a couple hours' drive.

  • I'm watching the first season of TNG now with someone who's never seen it before. That's forced me to look at the series with fresh eyes. One thing that strikes me is that TNG took a lot of risks in the beginning to make a new kind of Star Trek. I see the Crushers as one. Some risks didn't work out as well as others, but Star Trek overall benefited. IMO, it would be edifying revisit Dr. Crusher and see more character growth like in Picard.

    Edit: grammar

  • Shouldn't an ethical human choose tools that do more good than harm? As long as an application does that, does it matter if it's open source or not? The software we use in our daily lives is a personal choice and people shouldn't be shamed for choosing a closed source application. Especially one created by an independent, craftsman software company. Sync, and other well-designed for-profit clients, benefit Lemmy, an open platform. That benefits all.

Let me add, many of us are social media refugees, fleeing exploitative and closed platforms like Reddit, Twitter, and Facebook. There is also nothing wrong with continually evaluating the closed source solutions we choose to prevent repeating past mistakes.
