Google made it invite only when people actually wanted to try it. Then when people got tired of waiting and no longer interested, Google tried to push it to everyone.
I hear what you're saying about wars involving humans fighting for their people, but I think that oversimplifies things. Look, leaders and dictators have started plenty of wars just because of their own greed and hunger for power - not necessarily to protect their citizens.
And you can't overlook all the conflicts caused by religious differences, ethnic tensions, or just plain old misunderstandings between cultures. Ideology has been a huge driving force too - just look at wars fought over differing political systems or ideologies.
