  • Oh 100% that's an issue esp with Disney movies I feel like, but in general I find that there's a lot of just bad stereotypes that get away with masquerading as "gay humor", or the fact that a character is queer is just shoehorned in later, but plays no bearing on the character.

Anecdotally I've gotten back into Apex Legends recently, and LOVE the representation in that game. One of my mains, Fuse, is stereotypical Aussie manly man who loves explosives, and just so happens to be pansexual and very affectionate with his nb partner. They're a genuinely enjoyable couple without any of the traditional gay/queer stereotypes found in other media, it's so refreshing.

  • I was showing my nephews and niece pics of me with my ex once because she didn't visit with me and my niece asked to see pics.

The friend that introduced us is gay, and I had a pic of all of us during gamenight with him and his ex. My niece asked who his ex was, I couldn't remember their name, so I said "that was his boyfriend" to which the kids were surprised, and asked a couple questions, which I answered in a very basic, kid-friendly manner. Just the matter-of-fact manner in which I've always explained stuff to them.

Well that was enough to send my SIL flying into the living room with a bible to go over verses that talk about how it's sinful to be gay. I sat there holding my tongue, and I could see the confusion on their faces like "he was just telling us about his friend".

I waited until she was done to tell them that another reason I'm not a Christian anymore is bc I don't think who my friends are is wrong. (Which ofc brother and SIL got upset at later)

And in the conversation I had with my brother and SIL later on, they couldn't see how me talking about my gay friends differently to my straight friends or avoiding saying someone was gay if it came up was an issue. These people live in a twisted reality of their own creation, it's frightening.

  • I mean yeah it is a bit conspiratorial. Doesn't mean it's irrelevant. They're not making accusations, they're just floating the idea without attempting to present it as a serious accusation. I think that's generally how that comment was perceived, except for you.

The comments on a post about the killing of someone who defended two groups historically oppressed by police (homeless ppl and queer ppl) in a city whose police force is particularly known for such hate.......... yeah, there's gonna be some people being conspiratorial.

Doesn't mean it's an illogical suggestion to make, or one that can't be discussed.

    Also:

I would advise people, all people in general, to read some words about the thing they think they know something about, before they go about committing on such things and spreading misleading and false statements.

Enough with the bloviating. Reaaally thought you were crushin with that bit, huh? Yikes.

You literally just can't accept someone making a quip about police violence, that's all that's happening here. Nobodies "spreading misleading blahblah", okay? Ur just being dense.

  • They made a quip that referenced a popular anti-establishment song which criticizes police for acts of hate towards minorities.

This person, who was defending minorities, was shot and killed in their home, in the city whose police dept. dropped an actual bomb on minorities less than 40 years ago.

Police have also been known to enter people's houses and perform execution-style killings like this in the US.

    How is it irrelevant?

  • This person has a different perspective on world politics and propaganda efforts by the US, therefore they are a tankie.

This is the kind of one-sided, idiotic comment that leads to stifling of actual discussion of geopolitical issues like this, where different perspectives are much needed in this hyper-radicalized landscape.

You are directly contributing to the kind of radicalism that you so despise, because you react to a comment based on emotion and pre-judgement, rather than actually thinking critically about what is being said and responding with helpful criticism or perspective. Fucking hypocrite, shame on you.

  • What's the best way to export everything? The name of the theme I used is in the info panel there but if there's a way for me to export everything as I have it set I'm happy to help.

Otherwise I can get all the names of the different themes for ya.

  • It's absurd. The article is literally about US and Chinese propaganda, and a comment making a quip about US propaganda gets downvoted and called irrelevant.

Yuuup, nobody sipping propaganda here. And get called a tankie for wanting more rational thought and actual discussion than "China bad".

  • I mean, it's relevant to the article. It's not "but America" when "US" is the beginning of the headline... ?? 🤨

I'm not saying that the US State Dept report is false, but it also absolutely would not be the first time the state department has put out a false report. And they intentionally release reports - true or false - in a concerted effort to shape information and public opinion.

America absolutely spends countless taxpayer dollars on propaganda, and CNN, which is part of a multi-billion-dollar corporation that serves the interests of shareholders, advertisers, and lawmakers is absolutely part of that propaganda machine.

Again, not saying China is the good guy or that we should take their word here. But the US also isn't the good guy, and I think we should take State Dept. press releases with a grain of salt.

The comment you replied to was perfectly relevant and accurate, and was just someone making a quip about US propaganda efforts.

But apparently a Canadian knows better, so keep telling us about how US propaganda isn't relevant in world politics, thanks.

  • I also decided to dual boot Linux when I did a fresh Windows install this past weekend.

Because I hate myself I'm running Arch, but I was able to get Apex running well enough without too much fucking around. Problem is, I haven't been able to get OBS capture to run nearly as well as I can on Windows. I record at 1440/90 with high bitrate, and I haven't been able to get that working on Linux yet.

I really wanna jump full-on into Linux now and try living without windows, but sometimes I just need things to work without having to try 4 differently compiled versions of a program, and I don't know if I can get all my games running (Halo Infinite is giving me issues, if anyone has proton tips).

  • My 09 VW CC has knobs for bass, treble, and mid, in addition to volume. Seat heaters, AC, everything is tactile and I can operate anything without looking.

I know it's manufacturers wanting to save money, but it's so annoying that we're going backwards. Touchscreen is a form of input. Just because it's higher tech doesn't mean it should replace tactile inputs in all applications ffs.

  • No I mean things like settings applets/notification tray/widget functionality being better integrated into the overall desktop environment.

And customizing just results in less "jank" than Gnome. IDK how else to describe it, but it just feels like a DE that was actually designed with functionality over looks. Not to say I think it looks bad, but there's definitely less emphasis on "looking nice" over having the most robust experience, which I appreciate.

I do also like the broad strokes similarities to Windows just because things are where I expect a little more, but not really what I meant by mature, if that makes any sense.

  • As a long-time Windows user, things like settings or notifications are laid out much more logically, as well as I feel like everything in KDE is just a little better integrated than Gnome. Also a lot faster for me to get it to a point where I feel like I like it, and it seems to use a lot less system resources (although it's been a couple years since I daily'd linux, so it's possible that's different on Gnome these days).

But otherwise I don't have a whole lot of specifics, it just feels a lot more mature in general, like I don't have to search for anything I need DE-wise, it's always right where I'd expect and extremely well-built. And any extra functionality from add-ins works nicely.
