  • I'm not arguing that secular people (or, indeed, nations) can't be evil. While you bring up China, though, it's a bit of a myth that they're not religious; approximately 80% of the Chinese population practise cults of gods and ancestors or belong to folk religious movements.

My point was that it's a bit odd to pick the US as your example of a secular country when it is at the moment de facto Christian.

With regards to Bush being 'as religious as Trump', that's just simply not true. He's a pretty devout Christian, and has put it in a prominent position in all his campaign rhetoric, more than any other president of this generation. If you just Google George W Bush religion you'll find plenty of news articles from a variety of sources saying that (e.g. this or this).

  • It's not necessarily malicious -- given general humour in this country, it's likely he wanted to lose weight and asked his friend to text him that daily as a form of motivation.

Edit: however, I'd like to point out that consensually being sent that by a friend is fundamentally different to having abuse thrown at you by a stranger on the internet for your body shape.

  • !superbowl@lemmy.world has lots of cute owl pictures, and they recently did an 'owl of the year' bracket competition. I was rooting for the Blakiston Fish Owl, but the White Faced Scops Owl won in the end. Really positive bunch.

The various Tumblr communities are fairly active (curatedtumblr made the jump from Reddit, but there's a generic one too).

!femcelmemes@blahaj.zone is a very specific kind of shitposting humour; does what it says on the tin

Also internetfuneral made it, which is kind of low energy surreal shitposts.

Finally there's an active Calvin and Hobbes community, which can be a nice palate cleanser to arrive once in a while.

  • And what's interesting is that the suffragists (Millicent Fawcett chief among them) were at the same time working to peacefully lobby for suffrage, and yet they are not remembered remotely as much as the suffragettes.

What I personally believe is that the more militant wings of movements work best when they are bringing into focus something that the public already broadly believes. When people say 'I agree with their point, but not their methods', they're doing a whole lot of discussion of your issue, and agreeing with your message.

At the same time I think you do need the quiet lobbying to be done to effectively push for specific legislation. Both a carrot to offer government an easy path, and a stick to keep it in the public spotlight.

  • Trig

    Jump
  • You don't have to, but it seems perfectly easy since you don't have to write anything down to solve it. csin(arctan(b/a)) gives b, and ccos(arctan(b/a)) gives a. I'm not disputing that you can do it without, but I don't think it's necessarily any quicker or easier.

  • Trig

  • Ratios can be used in trig -- if it's 1.5 times as long as it is tall, tan(\theta) = \frac{2}{3}, which then allows you to find the lengths of the other two sides easily so long as you have a calculator.

  • The point is, I think, if they were to become billionaires (say Bll Gtes leaves it to them in his will), then they wouldn't be billionaires for long -- their moral compasses (given they've spent their lives on non-profit causes) dictate that they'd likely put the money into other non-profit ventures.

  • Probably not:

    "impregnable

    adjective

    1. Capable of being impregnated, as the egg of an animal, or the ovule of a plant.
    2. Not to be stormed, or taken by assault; incapable of being subdued; able to resist attack; unconquerable. "an impregnable fortress; impregnable virtue." Similar: unconquerable
    3. Too strong to be penetrated. "
  • And yet if a fancy restaurant does pea puree, people are all over it.

Mushy peas are made from a specific variety (marrowfat) that were selectively bred to be softer and have a nicer texture when pureed. People are just snobby about it, baked beans, and food like it because it's working class food, without being fetishised 'exotic' working class food.
