Where you work and what you do hardly matters in this case — unless you choose to send your request to ChatGPT (or whatever future model that gets included in the same model), everything happens on device or in the temporary private compute instance that’s discarded after your request is done. The on device piece only takes Neural Engine resources when you invoke and use it, so the only “bloat” so to speak is disk space; which it wouldn’t surprise me if the models are only pulled from the cloud to your device when you enable them, just like Siri voices in different languages.

I wonder if they’re gonna offload Siri requests to the private compute infrastructure to bring some of the Apple Intelligence features to “older devices” (I’m looking at my memory constrained iPhone14 Pro Max for example).

Apple’s implementation is much more privacy focused than others, so at least that’s not a concern here as compared to Android / Windows counter parts. However, if you really don’t want anything to do with it, then don’t upgrade to the new iOS/macOS; that’s probably your best bet if you want to stay behind.

Having said that, like it or not, this is the direction society is headed. Opting to be left behind is probably going to be detrimental in the long run. Your next device (as long as you remain anything remotely main stream) will have the newer OS installed, and have these features enabled by default. So may as well start embracing it now in the private Apple ecosystem, instead of throwing it all away at whatever other competitors’ ecosystem.

What’s the resources requirements for the 405B model? I did some digging but couldn’t find any documentation during my cursory search.

I’m inclined to think due to the nature of the platform, contents are constantly duplicated to the eyes of search engines, which hurts authoritativeness of each instance thereby hurts ranking.

I’m not refuting that the price is ridiculous, but shat you have there is just one VPS with single point of presence and single point of failure. Hopefully (seeing the provider wants to charge absurd amount of money for 2TB) there’s a much more robust infrastructure distributed globally for better performance and uptime than a single VPS.

You really should have separate services for registration, DNS and hosting. That way you’re not held hostage by a single provider.

You’d find about half of people whose creativity level being lower than the “average” (technically, mean). If Gen AI is learnt from the totality of our collective knowledge, it should help those on the lower half of the curve much more than those above the curve. However, since Gen AI itself is not able to create new concepts, the collective end up creating more of the same stuff that Gen AI is regurgitating from its training material.

I don’t think this is necessarily a bad thing. This doesn’t apply only to creativity but all spectrum of general knowledge, and should help with raising equity and equality for the humanity at large.

Are you by chance using something like Cloudflare? It may be possible that during the reboot the static IP changed, so your “gateway” cannot reach your router on your old IP no more?

The code check needs to have some time value associated with it. I taped the link via app, which loaded it in an in-app browser. After getting by the code challenge, I have to back out from the in-app browser to receive the message. Upon returning, the site sends a new code invalidating the old one, which prevents me from logging in. Codes should be valid for X minutes, such that users can fumble around their apps.

As long as the hardware is relatively close to the target level defined by Nintendo, it really doesn’t matter if the chip was “already old”. The developers know what hardware to expect, if they want their game to run on that console, they’d be on the hook to optimize for it.

I think it would be a good idea to take a step back and ask what is it that you’re trying to achieve.

Userbase, the service linked, is a backend as a service platform that offers you authentication and basic database that you can access via their api. You’d then code your own front end web app to interact with their service and store data there. You pay only per storage used by their storage tiers, which are frankly fairly fair priced. If that is something you’d need, that’s a good idea, but you’d be coding the front end yourself.

If you’re only looking for authentication with OAuth, and then coding your own API backend, then something like Authentik would be a nice self hosted authentication provider. Others that commonly gets mentioned but I’ve got limited/no experience with worlds new keycloak, or fusionauth. Managed services here would be your Auth0, Okta, etc.

If you’ve got a specific use case in mind, then it may be a good idea to say what service you’re thinking about, and the community may be able to suggest prebuilt solutions that good better and require less lift.

You didn’t wreck the big corps. You opted yourself out of their warranty thereby saving them any money they would’ve had to spend on repairing your purchase during the defined warranty window. If anything you lined their pockets by making yourself a cheaper customer.
