The real alpha main force pushers
Nice catch. I messed up the formatting on that link by putting an extra pair of parenthesis in there -- fixed now.
Bold of you to assume that an Emacs user will have anything remotely resembling the default keymap by the time they're proud enough to brag about it
That's why my terminal is emacs
Interesting! I tried uploading the same image and it became static (link). I think that seals it -- definitely a backend issue. The question remains as to why that's happening, but it's definitely tied to something about the configuration of the user's home instance. Credit where it's due: exactly as you've suggested
This information exists wherever your account exists. It's nonfederated data, similar to things like your email address, hashed password, and 2FA master key. No other instance has any need to know what notifications you've viewed, so they are never made privy to that information.
To clarify: federation is not like P2P where everyone gets a copy of everything. Federation only shares exactly what needs to be shared for the software to function. In the case of Lemmy, this boils down to the following data:
- User profiles
- Communities
- Posts
- Comments
- Votes
- Follows
- Blocks
- Private Messages
Some of you may be raising eyebrows at this list. Does this mean that anyone can see your votes & PMs at any time? No, not exactly. There's two big things to keep in mind here:
- When possible, the smallest possible amount of federation is used (e.g.: votes are only sent to the instance where the post/comment is, Blocks/PMs only get sent to the instance where the other user is, etc.)
- Unless it's something the website shows, only instance admins can view the data that gets federated with it. Your PMs may not be secure, but they're not exactly out on Google either.
At worst, here's what information can be captured by a random bad actor running their own evil instance:
- Your username
- Your public bio
- Your home instance
- Your moderated communities
- Your moderation history
- Your comment history
- Your post history
- Your votes specifically for posts/comments belonging to the bad instance
- Your follows specifically for communities belonging to the bad instance
- Your PMs specifically to users belonging to the bad instance
- Your blocks specifically of users belonging to the bad instance
The majority of this information is already publicly searchable on your home instance's website. Pretty much all of the scary stuff requires you to actually directly interact with the bad guy's instance. If you're about to vote or follow something sketchy, consider double-checking who runs the instance before you attach your name to it (that's what the rainbow link is for).
Well, it's not a frontend thing as far as I can tell because the expando also uses the thumbnail image when viewed on lemmy.world. I'm aware of some instances (e.g.: blind, lemmynsfw, etc.) that use a forked UI which might explain the discrepancy -- is it possible that the post you're referring to was hosted on one of those?
Otherwise, there's something going on at thumbnail creation time, possibly a bug, which I'd like to research further. Could you share an example post where the expando image was an animated webp? It doesn't have to be one of your own posts, of course, assuming you're worried about creating a papertrail to your alt account.
It didn't work when I tried it: https://lemmy.sdf.org/post/853240
If you inspect the source, you can see that a PNG thumbnail was automatically extracted from the webp and used for the expando image, even though the link source points to an animated webp.
For anyone interested, here's the Lemmy markdown configuration. As you can see, Lemmy's website UI supports the full commonmark spec (tutorial / official spec), plus a bunch of extensions. I don't think anyone's fully documented these yet, so I'll try doing so below. Apologies in advance to mobile users, this is probably gonna get ugly (see included image links for how it should look):
- URL autolinking (plaintext URLs automatically turn into links)
- Lemmy autolinking:

The frustrating answer is that each frontend will handle animated images differently, so you just kind of have to cope with that.
On the desktop website, there are two options to get animation working:
- Post a video format like webm instead -- upside: just works downside: doesn't loop
- Do a text-post with only the animated image -- upside: loops, supports alt-text downside: worse mobile experience
Within my own personal circle, I'm pretty sure it's because Overwatch imploded. Most of us saw it as the spiritual successor to TF2 and got really invested because it was pushing the genre forward. As OW2 slowly shat itself, everyone kind of just split off and fell into mourning. Now that it's been around a decade I think we've collectively begun feeling that nostalgic itch and are steadily coalescing back around TF2.
I don't really think this tracks. The production committee gets final say on the branding and the number of episodes in each contract. The studio doesn't get to play hooky and unilaterally tack on episodes to a fixed contract.
More likely, the production committee underestimated the remaining source material and thought they could wrap things up by commissioning an unusually long 16-episode season. It makes sense why they'd fall into this trap, I feel -- they'd just dumped Wit who had continuously given them scheduling problems and wanted to lock in MAPPA to get the thing finished in a single contract (which they clearly failed to do, since this season has now required 3+ separate production runs)
There's an interview from back in November 2020 which I think demonstrates their eagerness to conclude the series. It's not surprising to me that MAPPA were the only ones to tell them that such a thing would be possible:
Tateishi: "While season 3 was in production, we consulted with Wit Studio, and it was decided that The Final Season would be created by a different production studio. [...] Through many talks with Wit Studio, we understood that the continuation would be difficult, so we looked for a new studio. Kinoshita, Maeda, and I divided the searching duties among ourselves, but most studios turned us down. Everyone understood what big shoes they had to fill, and we were told by dozens of studios that they emphatically could not accept."
Maeda: "Of course, there were also those who told us that they had the desire to do it but just couldn't make it work in their schedule."
Tateishi: "The only studio that said they would consider it was MAPPA. When we talked to WIT about it, they said they could rest easy knowing it was in MAPPA's hands. The producers were in agreement, so the production shifted to MAPPA."
Kinoshita: "MAPPA took the matter firmly into their hands, saying, 'Attack on Titan should have a proper ending for the sake of the fans,' which also made a strong impression on us."
Maeda: "I think you can see their fighting spirit reflected in The Final Season's PV. The show is in good hands."
The producers also stressed that, for the sake of all the fans who have supported the series, they are determined to adapt the manga all the way until the end instead of concluding midway through. Kinoshita said that he has felt obliged to adapt the entirety of the manga ever since seeing the reaction to season 1 episode 13, where the Eren Titan seals the wall.

I agree. The only substantial quote in the entire article seems to originate from an utterly bored intern analyst:
The think tank said the reason for the leak was unclear although it could be an attempt to "rehabilitate Wagner's image," following the rebellion on June 24 in which it seized military facilities in the southern city of Rostov-on-Don and marched on Moscow. The ISW said it makes Wagner "look professional and appealing in comparison with the regular Russian military."
That's it? It's literally just a corporate charter! What a misleading headline 😩
May I ask whether you’re and english major? You say so much grammar so confidently, are you a teacher perhaps? The thing about agents I only heard once or twice in English class.
Nah, I'm just a college dropout who has weird interests lol! It has been my sincere pleasure to help out another learner 😊
I’m Hungarian btw, and I know how hard our language is, so I figured I could be of great help. It’s probably for the best as even I don’t know how to speak this shit culture rich language correctly :/
Greetings from across the ocean in Atlanta, GA!

tl;dr: annualized inflation figures cooled more quickly than projected, landing at 3.1% this month compared to 4% in June. This is down 6% compared to the peak annualized inflation figure of 9.1% from 12 months ago, though still 1.1% higher than The Fed's stated 2% target.
Like the alternating long/short. Imma start paying more attension to that maybe ppl actually use it, and I’ve just been ignoring it.
This is basically just a trick to sound more natural with less grammar, so feel free to pick and choose when to use it. So far I think you've struck a pretty good balance!
Is it correct to phrase it like: “the increase in X tells me” or “the increase in X leads me to”?
Yes, both of these sentences sound very natural to me. I think you've gotten the hang of it
Also what is that “new language” that you been trying to learn, maybe just maybe, it’s mine :)
Japanese! I'm a mega-weaboo lol
I’m fucking ashamed that probably the single largest info drop that I got for speaking tips came from me being a fucking slob… (I should change)
Yeah, you might want to work on your hygiene... It's OK, though. We all have our circumstances and other people on the internet are rarely as perfect as they claim to be!
Does the focus have to be on X (only giving it adjectives, I believe you’ve done that)?
It's less about the pattern of the sentence and more about a grammatical concept called the "agent". The agent is the "doer" of the sentence. In English, the agent is usually (not always!) based on the sentence subject and native speakers will use one of several different tricks to shuffle the agent around when talking about an inanimate subject. I'll list a few additional ways of doing this below to help illustrate:
Unnatural: My shirt wrinkled
This is a normal type of sentence, so the agent is the subject ("my shirt"). An inanimate agent sounds unnatural, so try to avoid this
Natural: My shirt is wrinkled
In this sentence we've introduced a copula ("is") as the main verb of the sentence. Copula-based sentences like this one describe states of being and thus contain no action at all (e.g.: "My shirt is red" -- no action!). No action means no agent. No agent means no problem!
Natural: My shirt got wrinkled
This is a way of speaking called the "passive voice" which implies a hidden agent as the true doer of the action. Since the agent is hidden, it won't be based on the subject, so an inanimate subject can be used without sounding unnatural.
Natural: My shirt wrinkled itself
This is a way of speaking called the "reflexive voice" which you can use if the verb in question also has a transitive form (AKA: if it's a "labile verb"). In the reflexive voice, all agents automatically become animate. No inanimate agent means no problem!
Natural: The sun rose
Some non-living things are still considered to be animate. These are almost always things which appear to move of their own volition, such as celestial bodies ("The moon shone") or vehicles ("The boat sank"). There's no problem with using animate things as the agent!
I feel like you are still fracturing discussion by posting to both lemmy.ml and ani.social. Can you not crosspost in lemmy (ie make the lemmy.ml posts take you to ani.social)? So everyone is funneled to the same spot.
I, too, put a high value on helping discussions succeed and strongly want to avoid smothering discussion threads at such an early stage in this community's growth. You should know that the possibility of using crossposts as you've suggested was explored, but unfortunately needed to be shelved.
You see, crossposts don't actually share comment sections; users that click on the link will see the original's comment section and users that click on the discussion button will see the crosspost's comment section. I decided that this approach would cause confusion and only further worsen the problem and so gave up on it. What we'd need to make your crossposting suggestion work would be a special type of crosspost that has a shared comment section -- this is something I've been actively advocating for to the developers as you can see here. If they ever agree to accept a PR, I plan to implement the code for it myself.
As for my little discussion community on ani.social: it primarily exists as a place to responsibly test and develop the bot without negatively impacting anyone else's userbase. Yes, I'm also positioning it as a place where others can visit and discuss, but this is just my own personal hedge against the possibility of !anime@lemmy.ml becoming unviable for whichever reason. You'll note that the subscriber count of my community is quite low and that I personally follow a strict policy of never actively mentioning/promoting it. If the situation changes so that the continued presence of my community substantially harms or otherwise steals growth from other Lemmy anime communities, you have my promise that I will shut it down -- and no: simply existing as an alternative does not count as substantial in my book.
Hi, thanks for reporting this issue! I was able to verify that shinobu's posts aren't populating on kbin, which is certainly not an ideal situation. After doing a little research, it appears that kbin.social currently completely refuses to federate content from any bot (see kbin-core#350 @ CodeBerg).
I couldn't seem to find any official comment on this behavior, so I can't comment on if this is by design or simply some oversight. I tried searching the kbin codebase for hints as to what might be going on, but nothing at all comes up in relation to the federated bot_account
flag. I'm truly stumped 🤷
It is technically possible to bypass this through incorrectly marking shinobu as a human, but I won't agree to do that as it sabotages the experience of users who specifically choose not to see bot content. At this point, I'm afraid that the only remaining course of action is for you to follow up on the aforementioned CodeBerg issue with your report and wait for an update from earnest.
I don't disagree with any point you make here, but these are all evils which exist independent of whether or not they are funded by debt, taxes, or some other alchemy, right? The policies wouldn't be worth it even if the government got to paid to implement them.
I'm a plaintext git patch sent via email and lost in the maintainer's spam folder
