  • As far as how you can watch videos remotely between multiple people, there are some websites where you can stream videos through a virtual browser. You can visit a website in them and have the content of the website be shared between multiple people. Usually they also have a way to comment, or talk to the participants. Some of the better examples include:

    1. https://watch.hyperbeam.com/
    2. https://caracal.club/

I'm not up to date on any communities to find people to watch videos with in real-time , maybe someone else can chime in on that front.

  • Socializing in school is only really allowed in the ~20% of time not made up of lectures / homework. E.g. Recess/Lunch/In-between classes. The other 80% is largely made up of lectures and homework. Ideally those percentages should be flipped. 80% learning via social learning(socialization) / 20% lecture.

Call me crazy, but I think humans learn best socially(conversationally) not by lecture via teacher. Talking and socializing should be integrated in how we learn and teach. The learning should largely be social between the students so that they actually learn material instead of just learning to temporarily remember the information for the next test.

The teacher should drift between the groups of students and clear up any misconceptions or disagreements that occur.

  • Yeah, you're probably right to some degree. It may not have been fully intentional on the part of the designer.

However, since the elites of the time controlled the government, the government would tend to favor institutions that elites think will benefit from.

  • Relationships are discouraged through school, in favor of competition, so we can be more effectively exploited by the elites (and all hierarchical societies). That is by design. Healthy individuals with good relationships are harder to sell to and to exploit. It's relatively hard to convince someone who is satisfied with their life and image to buy something. It's a lot easier to convince them to instead seek emotional satisfaction through excessive buying (escapism). Each new item (or service) you get can temporarily fill the emotional void and provide a fleeting sense of excitement or comfort.

  • It is very easy to get discouraged with various ideologies as they are often based in the abstract and therefore hard to apply to the real world. With that said I'll give you a slice of my own thinking / research on the matter. At a high abstract level, I think most economies needs to be more socially owned instead of privately owned and more market based rather than command based. Some possible theories and policies to help bring this change about are Mutualism and Georgism.

Mutualism encourages the concepts of mutual aid, workplace democracy and self management(cooperatives), and dual power. Dual power is essentially building alternative institutions to the ones that already exist in society until they can eventually supplant the existing institutions. Direct Action also plays a big role in anarchism in general and therefore Mutualism.

Also some georgism inspired policies such as a UBI and a Land Value Tax to be good starting points as far as policy as they are policies that could redistribute wealth from capitalists(1%) to the people.

There is obviously a lot more to unpack especially relating to Mutualism. Interestingly, there is a service built with the principles of mutual aid and direct action built and administered by @db0@lemmy.dbzer0.com called AI Horde.

The underlying principles of direct action, mutual aid, and to a lesser degree dual power are ones that be implemented in your own life and are good places to focus your research in my opinion.

  • I absolutely agree that we need a better system of running this country and am fully on board with all the listed policies.

However, It's only unsustainable if the American people have the balls to challenge it. I'm not exactly convinced of that when we as a country can barely say no to a blatant villain(Trump). Good change only happens when the people stubbornly demand it. I honestly can't remember a time in my lifetime where that has happened.

Instead, we get tiny morsels of change that are carefully doled out to keep us voting the 'right'TM way.

We are all just checked out escaping reality in our little bubbles expecting things to magically change. Oh, how I wish change worked like that. But sadly, It does not. If you want change, it takes the stubborn, unyielding willpower of forcing your position onto others continually.

And that is something we as a people have gradually forgotten. Unfortunately, the haters among us have not. They continually push their values onto others. They have worked to undermine abortion for 50+ years. And it worked and continues to work.

We have to out organize them to have any hope of things actually changing for the better. And it's a Hell of a lot easier to tear things apart than to improve them.

  • I see. With the link you should be able to query a geojson file that can then be imported into geojson.io. I used Query 'GLOBALID IS NOT null' to get the top 50 of 2000 results. That should give you a starting piont. The first link is just a way to query the data in this link

I'm unfamilar with Qgis but I have been able to import layers into geojson.io before from arcGIS.

  • Yeah, I usually try to avoid correcting people, but I didn't want any misspellings giving any future viewers a bad first impression of the linked educational resource.

Mine too. As far as spellchecking, I use a front-end(Alexandrite) for Lemmy that spellchecks. However, I get that a lot of people use a mobile interface that makes it easier to miss such things.

I have found myself, recently, rediscovering how to make goals and plans after having them suppressed by the conventional school system for most of my life. That fits with the deschooling term that is used on the linked resource. According to [self-directed.org] (https://www.self-directed.org/sde/conditions/) "In Self-Directed Education communities, young people are sharing an environment with adults who are deschooling alongside them"

  • There is certainly an element of this being PR for Microsoft. But it is worth considering that a huge amount of computing is done in large data centers.

I think this fact could easily jump-start the use of a technology such as this. If it starts out where every large to mid-sized data center has a reader and writer shared among their thousands of customers it certainly would make it more viable.

I would guess the AI service is MS's way of trying to make sure they control the technology. Hopefully, it eventually can get replaced by a local AI model rather than MS's proprietary AI.

  • Just wanted to add, that the phenomenon described with in the comment replied to, although all too common, are not universal., nor always are they the only option.

Great point. The link provided looks interesting, I'll take a look at it.

Side Note: The spelling mistakes in the first and second paragraph kinda detract from your message about different ways of organizing education. It is pretty ironic to have a post with multiple misspellings recommend a different way of education.

  • It seems like it would make for a great replacement for Tape Backups that are currently used for long term storage. They are easy to write to but hard to read from and restore. It'll probably be a great technology to put backups on especially if it lasts as long as they say. The challenge will probably come in with the specialized reading and writing laser / microscopes being expensive.

  • investment platform

What a fancy way of describing real estate.

It's much more accurate to call it, exploiting poor people's basic needs to get ahead. But of course then you'd be reminding them they aren't the goody two shoes they like to cosplay as. Can't have that.

  • Not sure what your use case is, but consider something like geojson.io if you can export the map data somehow. You might be able to do this from their interface or you might have to do browser network capturing to capture the requested data. It supports GeoJSON as well as KML, GPX, CSV, GTFS, TopoJSON formats.
