  • How are you getting FreeCAD to run poorly? I've run it fine on a Raspberry Pi.

  • I wanted to be a pilot since I was a child. I got an introductory ride in a Cessna on my 14th birthday. Started taking flying lessons in earnest around 16, earned a private pilot's license my freshman year of college. Decided I wanted to go into it as a job, started working on my instrument rating, and for my junior year of college I transferred to ERAU in Daytona Beach. Lasted just over a semester there. Ended up earning a light sport flight instructor certificate and I taught classes at a small school, eventually earning an LSRM certificate and working as the company mechanic as well. I'm a walking flight school, just add airplane.

Wasn't earning enough money to pay all my own bills, and though I was logging 20-30 hours a week of flight time little of it was applicable to further ratings, and then the owners of the school started doing some sketchy shit and I decided to dip out. In the summer of 2012 I landed after a lesson with a student, and I haven't flown an airplane since.

I kinda built myself a job as the project manager of a little job shop/prototyping firm, then that business didn't survive COVID. I'm a woodworker now.

  • I am a pilot and flight instructor. I don't know about a child but I've explained the art of airplane flying such that a teenager can understand it.

  • Yeah, and for basically the same reason.

  • Meanwhile the aviation industry uses English worldwide.

  • Make an account elsewhere and comment on this post.

    Challenge accepted.

  • Is that the one where the boy just up and decides to go live in a tree up in the Caskills and ends up with a pet falcon, or is that the one where the kid is stranded in the woods in a plane crash? I read those two books around the same time in later middle school and I think they ran together in my brain.

  • The fact that the entire medical industry does this. I like how ChubbyEmu on Youtube will do the vocabulary resurrection "Hyponatremia. Hypo meaning low, natra meaning sodium, emia, presence in blood. Low sodium presence in blood" and then he'll use the English phrase for the rest of the video. "Because he had low blood sodium..."

  • It rather thoroughly wore out its welcome with me.

Steam says I played it 28 minutes. Most of that was sitting through intro cinematic. I didn't finish the tutorial mission, I'd be surprised if 5 minutes out of that 28 was actually spent in-engine playing the actual game.

Forgot to mention, the amount of real estate on the title screen trying to get me to buy more shit...that scraped my taint more than a little. I've blacklisted entire studios for less.

  • Subnautica comes to mind. It's a survival game with a heavy focus on exploring and a very structured story. Fluff text and the obligatory random documents and audio logs are mostly optional, though the game does have a mystery to solve so some of those you want to pay attention to. No real spikes in difficulty, it's honestly an easy game.

  • I have a pretty good canning set up, and strawberry jam is the first recipe in the book.

  • I could get it done with a couple stepper motors, an Arduino, probably a couple hall effect sensors.

  • That one ran on a laserdisc, right? Like a CAV disc so it could very quickly move the laser to one of a couple of places for basically a win/lose decision, overlaying some graphics over top for the game UI?

  • Okay, here's the challenge: Make it always tell the correct time 8:30 should point to the 8 with the little hand and the 6 with the big hand. And 8:35 shoudl point to the 7 with the big hand.

  • Carol of the Bells kicks ass.

Tell you what I can't stand, is The Obligatory Christmas Release. Some musical act, band or increasingly a solo "artist" gets big and especially if they have one brand-defining hit, they are required to do a Christmas release that is the thing they're known for with sleigh bells and a word salad of Christmas words including a refrain where they just shout "It's Christmas!!!" Los Del Rio did a Macarena Christmas mix. And we allowed society to continue anyway.

  • Hansen has a large discography with a bunch of good stuff in it and MmmBop.
