  • The exception is sewing machines. My 1970s version is still going while more recent ones fail because of plastic parts. The repair man offered me a great deal of money if I would sell the old one to him.

  • At least in the USA and I presume other places, having a child is not only an increasingly insurmountable financial burden, but also society and school are actively anti-discipline to the point you can't even stop a kid from running wild and dominating the household. I am constantly amazed at parents who seem completely unable to keep their children from running amok and bothering people or destroying things in public, skipping school, eschewing homework, and disrupting class, yelling, punching, and kicking their own parents, etc.

Why anyone should want to subject themselves to a lifetime of hassle and heartache is the question. I have one kid and he is pretty awesome, but he was raised before the Internet and smartphones became the world's nannies. If I were of childbearing age, I would get my tubes tied if I could get somebody to do it.

Not to mention climate change is probably going to doom any child born now to life in a physical and political hellscape.

  • I believe humans are inherently racist, or actually discriminatory against those not considered part of our "tribe," whatever that may be. We have a built-in "us versus them" mentality that exists despite conscious efforts to educate and be mindful of those attitudes in ourselves. The sooner we admit to subconscious bias, the sooner we can mitigate it by remaining vigilant against that kind of thinking.

  • My son graduated with a degree in economics in 2020 and still hasn't found a job. He's not counted in the unemployment numbers because he hasn't filed for benefits. We need to look at labor participation as well as underemployment instead of the useless stats being used in this article. Real wages have tanked. People are running up debt just to buy groceries. It's desperate out there.

  • My husband absolutely adored these because they were wholesome with no gratuitous sex or violence. He was a conservative Christian and these were some of the few shows he could really enjoy unreservedly. (I doubt he would have been pleased to see a gay story, though. He's not around to ask, unfortunately.)

I find them predictable and banal. But to each his own. He would watch a Hallmark movie in one room and I'd be in the other room watching Criminal Minds or something LOL
